Ipad storage and costs, how do they get away with it

Just a quick moan about Apple, I'm shopping for a new tablet my three year old has taken over my nexus 7.

It amazes me that Apple can charge x amount for the 16gb ipad air and almost £100 more for the 32gb version especially since it costs next to nothing to install a bigger drive.

I've been reading ios takes up a lot of storage on the ipad air really rendering the 16gb useless if you plan on using it for more than the basics.

I know it's a must have gadget for some but why are apple still offering a 16gb model, it seems it's there way of forcing people to spend more and get the 32gb model.

I used to have iPhones from the 3 to the 4s then switched to Android because of apples crazy pricing for new devices and no expandable memory, I can't see them ever offering expendable memory purely to force people into coughing up the cost of a second hand car for the top of the range model.

If only people boycotted apple, there is no need for them to continue to charge people hundreds of pounds extra for a bigger drive that might cost a pound to upgrade.

Oh I've decided to go for either a Samsung galaxy tab s or a Sony experia z2, I'd like to give apple another chance but won't be ripped off paying extra for a bigger drive that would cost apple next to nothing to install on the base model

At least with the tablets and phones and iPods you are only paying for the bigger drive. Unlike with computers where you cannot choose only a better graphics chip or more storage or faster processor.

Anytime we have bought a pc we have bought the components ourself and made it to our own spec, I did read somewhere you'll soon be able to put together your own tablet or phone built to any spec you want within reason.

I would have bought the ipad air if the basic model started at 32gb or the price difference wasn't so extreme.

Plenty of us do, welcome to the club.
  • You might not want an iPad at the moment anyway. iOS 8 has been nothing short of a car crash leaving many people's iPads practically unusable.

The Ipad uses a drive? ;)

It is solid state memory that is used for storage. (Basically non-volatile RAM). The extra they charge for the larger storage is only partly due to the cost of the NVRAM chips; it is mostly due to marketing - more is better therefore we'll charge more for it.

Drives, solid state memory does it really matter? The cost to them according to a post I read on an apple forum is very little.

Either way you'd have to be stupid to pay hundreds of pounds more for bigger "solid state memory"

The ipad air two is due out soon and I feel sorry for those who queue up for hours to get one just to get screwed over on the price

To the Technorati - yes. ;)

It's not just Apple that do this. When I bought my Nexus 4 (16GB) the 32GB version was about £40 more expensive. The additional 16GB memory would have only actually cost £5 at the most.

    That's nonsense.

    Why?

    Because people will pay it.

Whenever you price any goods you consider the elasticity of your market and then balance the price you are going to sell it at against the number of units you are going to sell.

Apple obviously have a target market and their analysts have clearly calculated what they think the optimal pricing is for that market. This is a different market to Kou-zone as a saw their tablets being sold down the local market for about £25 each and you'll be pleased to know you could add additional memory to its 4GB built in!

There really is little point complaining about their pricing, either you like the product, brand and pay the price or its not for you and you go for a different brand.

As to why 16gb still exists? Because for many of us its sufficient for our needs and why do I want to pay £100 more for another 16gb that I wouldnt use?

I use my tablet for apps, games and web browsing. I dont take photos with it, I dont store data on it, dont normally put my music/ movies on it and so 16gb is plenty for my needs and I can put a couple of movies on it if I want to take it on a flight.
