I think its down to revenue as well.

Apple seem to have a customer base who are prepared to pay well over the top for their products so you cannot blame them.

Of cause it is, they are a company and have a legal duty to their shareholders to act in the best interest of the company.

Now you can try and rationalise how they came to the decision but its all going to be educated guess work unless there is a big (shareholder) revolt and they get called up to justify why they took a course of action that has damaged the company and even then its mainly to try and save their jobs/ avoid being sued than anything else.

Based on the results for the iPhone6 so far I doubt that will happen so it'll remain guesswork.

I disagree that Apple customers are necessary paying over the top, though it is harder to argue with the "i" devices. They are certainly paying a premium but when you look at the minority of other providers that also sell a laptop thats just 0.3-1.7 cm thick with an i5 CPU and 12 hours battery life you find they are actually all very comparable in price.

Now, does someone really need a laptop that is 3mm thick at the front when you can get one that is uniformly 17mm for half the price is justified question but a different one to if Apple are overpriced or not

" i dont buy apple products because i want the logo, I buy them as it all just works together. "

Quite. I can be as hardcore as you like (hell, my day-to-day laptop ran Solaris for some years) and parts of my home network include hand-soldered equipment that I designed and built myself. But the production part of the home network is mostly Apple kit, because it just works and isn't, all things considered, wildly over priced, for the reasons Inside spells out.

My phone is only 16gb with 12gb of usable storage, and it's not nonsense that 16gb isn't enough for the average user. I know it's nonsense from the endless posts from people complaining after the new updates your getting left with less and less space.

12gb on my phone isn't enough, I keep having to delete things I can't even have my music on it I had to delete it so it's clearly not enough for your average user.

To ditch the 32gb iPhone to force people know buying the 64 version is ridiculous, they have you over a barrel either put up with 16gb that won't be enough for most or cough up for the big brother.

I wasn't suggesting people buy it to be snobs or anything, I know how well apple products are made compared to others I'm just shocked at the constant hype and massive queues for the latest gear.

It's a must have gadget for some it's just crazy what their willing to pay for it, I can afford it but I wouldn't be silly enough to pay for it if rather get Samsung or HTC which is equally as good if not better for much less.

Im also the guy who when my dad was looking at an Audi A6 i told him to look at the Skoda Superb as it would be extremely similar but far cheaper.

but i dont buy apple products because i want the logo, I buy them as it all just works together. my home network is all Apple (Apple TV, iMac, iPhone, iPad, MacBook) and it all works seamlessly together. I know this is achievable with Apple alternatives, but ive never researched how because i dont mind spending money on stuff that hasnt let me down (i have a 7 yr old MacBook and 5 yr old MacBook still going strong!)

So Apple can charge what they want as if i want the product, and can afford it, i will buy it.
however i do look at some items (Apple Watch) and I'm not prepared to pay that much for that item...
Buying another product over an iPad because of the number of grambits it has is in some ways missing the point; it's a bit like choosing a car based solely on its 0-60 time or choosing a meal on its calorific value without consideration to whether you like it.

    Just a thought, the iPhone 5S 32GB launched at £629. The iPhone 6 64GB is £619

Are you still sure you want your 32GB SKU back ?

The 16GB iPhone was always the most popular, people companied when they ditched the 8GB version, I suspect if they pushed the 32GB one people would complain they were being "forced" to pay tons more without actually checking what the comparable price was.

Well, we've got 6 16GB iPhones in the family, running iOS8, and it's working for us.

Usecases vary. None of us use our phones as iPods, for example. If you use a phone as a phone, with some applications, and take the occasional photograph which is rapidly uploaded by Photostream, why would you need more than 16GB?
16gb that won't be enough for most

Most? Do you have, like, any evidence for that?

In my case, I replaced a (Nokia) phone and an iPod with a 64GB iPhone 5; it's got a load of music and apps on it. I needed 64GB for it to do its job.

I don't think an 8GB iPhone was sufficient; not enough space to get a load of apps on it, and there's little point in having an iPhone just to make calls on; it's kind of missing the point.

I would say that the most likely reason the 16GB one was the most popular is because that was the default one included in bundles.

I've just got an iPhone 6 as a work phone, and I'm not sure I like the larger size (well, actually I don't!). The fingerprint button is a great feature though, and I keep trying to do it on my personal iPhone 5 now...

In the case of the iPad, it can work in two ways:
    (a) as a front-end to web/cloud based services, and
    (b) as a standalone device holding content (books, documents, movies, music) and able to work disconnected.

I would suggest that 16GB is fine for (a), but something of the order of 1TB or more is really what's required for (b), so that you aren't having to copy things on/off it all the time to manage storage space.

Since you can't get a 1TB tablet, I think the 16GB version will do for me.

It amazes me how expensive the steel in the larger heavier BMWs is. If you buy a big one it has hardly any more parts but much more steel. They charge a fortune for that steel!

    Not quite an accurate analogy.

The cost of the steel used to build a car is a significant proportion of the over all cost.

Also if it is a bigger car it will usually have a bigger more expensive engine, bigger suspension and braking components. More sophisticated drive train and usual a better all round spec, eg better seats, wheels, music systems, electronic everything etc. Who buys a big flash car with a poverty spec?

Steel seems to be about $440 per tonne at the moment. The real logic of pricing for finished products is what the market will bear.
