It's easy - if you don't want to buy Apple, then don't.

I have a 16GB iPad, and that suits me.

The iPad is not a device which is designed to hold lots of data; it is designed to work in a (wireless/cloud) networked environment.

As to why 16gb still exists? Because for many of us its sufficient for our needs and why do I want to pay £100 more for another 16gb that I wouldnt use?

Has anyone seen the official reason why the 32gb version of the iPhone6 was ditched? It's very strange to go from 16gb to 64gb.

InsideInsurance explained why a few posts ago. (#11)

For those who don't need on-board storage 16 GB is enough. For those who do want to store a few games, films or music then 32 GB is (almost) pretty pointless nowadays - may as well jump to 64 and 128 GB.

But if they did offer a 32 GB then too many customers would be happy to make do with that bottom price point one and would not pay the extra £100 for a 64 GB.

Edit: aargh, answered thinking of iPad rather than iPhone. Still, same principle (other than films, perhaps (although some do, apparently)) applies. There is also the camera (including video) to account for the space.)

You wont ever see an official reason. Its not an industry that is so heavily regulated for them to have to justify every decision they make.

Presumably, as a lay person thinking about it, they see two groups of users emerging. One that uses their devices for applications, relatively data light etc and so 16 gb is sufficient (like me). On the other hand you have those that want to store their full music, photo and movie collection on it in which case 32gb isnt really enough and 64 or 128 are more appropriate.

There will obviously be some who are between the two but the maths is done and more revenue is generated by dropping the 32 and having a few go down to 16, more go up to 64 and a proportion that go elsewhere.

I think its down to revenue as well.

Apple seem to have a customer base who are prepared to pay well over the top for their products so you cannot blame them.

BTW it's GB before the internet police arrive :D

Audi are still in business, even though the cars are pretty much the same as the far cheaper Skodas and Seats. Certainly, a Seat Leon has far more in common with an Audi A3 than an iPad does with an Android tablet. And yet no-one appears to be up in arms about either the cupidity of Audi or the stupidity of their customers.

    I buy Apple products.

Im also the guy who when my dad was looking at an Audi A6 i told him to look at the Skoda Superb as it would be extremely similar but far cheaper.

but i dont buy apple products because i want the logo, I buy them as it all just works together. my home network is all Apple (Apple TV, iMac, iPhone, iPad, MacBook) and it all works seamlessly together. I know this is achievable with Apple alternatives, but ive never researched how because i dont mind spending money on stuff that hasnt let me down (i have a 7 yr old MacBook and 5 yr old MacBook still going strong!)

So Apple can charge what they want as if i want the product, and can afford it, i will buy it.
however i do look at some items (Apple Watch) and I'm not prepared to pay that much for that item...
  • I believe the phrase is "no one forces you to buy Apple products"

They cost what they cost, and the economics behind the price points aren't very complex. They typically offer 3 'levels' (Entry level/pointless storage amount, Intermediate/Enough storage to do most things with, High end/So much storage you don't know what to do with it)

The low end price isn't normally too far from the intermediate, and it is there to persuade you to spend more on the product. I still remember the days when RAM was ludicrously expensive and I don't think you can directly compare the cost of a memory stick to the memory/storage used in an Apple product.

I just laugh at these devices anyway when I pop in a 32gb microSD into my android phone, then plug it into a USB hard disk using USB on-the-go.
