I may well do that... once the rest of the house is finished :)

DW uses decorator's caulk. Is that the same thing as flexible filler?

We were told to use it as packing behind the powdered limestone filler we're using to make good around the fireplace, which must expand and contract a lot. ;)

Sitting here learning my new song, or trying to. I couldn't do the one I originally wanted, as there wasn't a suitable backing track available free. Anyway, I'm not sorry, because it was really difficult and I was finding it tricky to sing it well enough, but badly, if you know what I mean!

So now I'm doing, "Stand By Your Man," which is more audience-friendly and relatively easy to overdo..... and ruin. :D

It'll say flexible on the tube if it is.

So Stand by Your Man will be echoing down the valleys?

Poppy, not a touring caravan in late autumn or winter! You [STRIKE]will[/STRIKE] may hate it. Mind you, BiL/SiL come here in February and love it, but they have another option here if things cut up rough.

It's actually looking like the only affordable option :( I did some sums yesterday and renting is going to be too expensive. We'll be keeping the family home for now (that's why we can't afford to rent) as our DDs won't be coming with us initially, so I suppose we do have somewhere to run back to if it all goes pear-shaped.

We should have a daydreamers trip to see Dave [STRIKE]murdering the song[/STRIKE] singing his heart out :D

choille, I know you have lived in a caravan for a while, do you think living in a touring caravan is feasible?? I'm guessing you're in a static?? We'd be looking at getting a 4-berth and it would be 3 week stints, with a weekend at home, then onto another site for 3 weeks etc.

We lived in a static for 7 years which was nuts in many ways, but that was what happened.

I do know someone who did stay in a tourer as they built - well they ended up paying quite a bit in camp site fees - although they did negotiate for a reduction. It wasn't ideal as she broke her ankle & well.... Fine if you have ground that you can do something on - but on a campsite it's a bit restrictive. The static was our solution to saving paying out rent - we needed every penny. But in your situation I would be tempted to buy a van & park up discreet - save on camp site fees. You can then move around. If it doesn't look like a mega camper van then you'd get away with it.
But there again I'm just tight & to me living in a camp site would be like a miny version of a housing scheme - I couldn't do it.

I like your thinking choille :D I'd rather not pay site fees but unfortunately I don't think DH & I are the type of people to feel comfortable just parking up somewhere, especially because we don't know the area that well.

We're back to considering buying somewhere small now :o I'm going to look into how much we could borrow over the longest time at a fixed rate just to see if it could be affordable. I'm thinking what we would pay for a caravan could be used as a mortgage deposit. I know there would be solicitors fees etc. to pay as well.

Hmm, I think we're going to be going backwards and forwards with ideas over the next few months.

P.P. What time of year are you looking at moving down there? You might find some of the summer holiday rental properties (that might be a little cramped) would leap at a longer rental over colder months. You might also find some of the touring caravan hirers are willing to let you have an upper-range model out of season. There will be the world of difference between summer and winter prices, if you negotiate a bit. If you are clearly in the buying market, see what estate agents have to rent; you'll be amazed how they'll bend over to get their lettings side to "sort you out" if they think there's a sale in it! ;)

Today was milder, about time too. The water to the barns froze up, so it was buckets at dawn (and a wellie accidentally fills so easily pre-coffee). I emptied the water troughs today, as the water was running again, and tipped out some seven-inch ice! Sheep are podging up nicely, and soon to lamb. Doves are breeding like rabbits, which are too, no doubt. There's a swan claiming the end of the water meadow, so that's now out of bounds for labour. Not arguing with a broody swan! :D Rescued a vole from a moggie first thing, and neither looked best pleased at my involvement! Vole in a greenhouse to recuperate.

I've been clearing ash trees that have dieback. Not my favourite tree, but still sad. More firewood!

Dave... over-doing a rendition in a pantomime... Is that even possible? :D

You could do reccys - if you use a plain van with no windows and an airbed & little gas bob for cooking you can park even in towns - says she. I'm just a gypsy at heart. You could do w/e look sees.

You can buy cheap caravans, but you'd need a site to camp on.

These hired camper vans are mega expensive even in Winter.

    hi all

well after days of total "white outs".. I thought it had broken through today...but no ! it lifted for a few hours then came back with a vengeance...

what baffles me is the people driving through a thick white fog WITH NO LIGHTS ON !! the visibility is so poor, they sort of loom up in front of you and startle you...

I haven't seen the field beside me for days now... could have a bluddy housing estate built and I wouldn't know ;)

dave... I have no doubt that whatever rendition you give/decide on it will no doubt amuse the masses...:D

whilst I thought I was so skint that the idea of tuneless busking seemed appealing ... [theyd pay me to stop ;) ] I have suddenly received a healthy cheque for money they say they owe me as I overpaid on some payments over the last 2 years :D:D
so, overdraught cleared, dog will be speyed, carpet will be laid and I will breath again :j

son goes to Canada for 4 months on 7th feb so although I will miss him , I will save more money [food and leccy] ...

re camping/caravanning. I used to let my holiday cottage cheap to keep it open in the winter months BUT I was cheap, some wont be if they think they can chance it ... why not , as suggested, get in touch with the static holiday sites. they will let much cheaper as some are privately owned/let and the season usually ends September . so any income for them is good ...
