HW's family have at last come round to the idea that keeping her in her own home is madness. The carers were good, but she wasn't cooperating and there were 3 emergency alarms in the past week, none of which were routed through here after we failed to respond to the first. (we were out.
)
Anyway she's gone to a nursing home, where they hope to establish a routine, as she's unwell and confused again.
I had an interesting time in the pub tonight, where I'd gone as a recruit for neighbourhood watch. There, I found myself talking to the local expert on the dodgy religious cult that once set up a school here and tried to establish itself further, before eventually closing due to the demise of the parent organisation.
Intriguing stuff. Lots of naked frolics in the fields apparently, and that was just the staff....
Now, how am I going to warn Mr Dog about all the criminal activity in the area? Semaphore perhaps? Drone? No, he'd shoot it! :rotfl:
Ideas on the back of a new, non-veggy £5 note please.0 -
What was the name of the cult Dave?
HW needs full time care, but whether she wants it is probably a different matter as you've explained, but it will be less fraught for everyone.
Sorry to hear you have criminal activity about - not good. Hope they catch someone.0 -
Hello... thread stalker here reporting for duty! I have skimmed all of these threads from the very first post and read all of the last 100 pages or so... there are some benefits to being unemployed!
To introduce myself I'm a 30yr old bloke who grew up in rural Somerset with most of my pre-teenage years spent on farms and in fields etc. Now I'm living in a tiny 1 bed flat in Cornwall with my fiance and a rescue dog. My previous business went bust about a month ago but I'm working on plans to start at least one new one if not more haha.
My dream has always been to buy some land or a small holding, I've been binge-reading Mr Money Mustache and various other websites to figure out how I can put together enough money for a largely self sufficient lifestyle out in the country. Luckily my fiance is totally on board and we share the vision of veggy patch, wood burner, pigs and a dozen rescue dogs haha.
I may not post much in here at the moment as all I have is a 15' x 15' gravel covered back garden but if I'm lucky it will soon be home to some no-dig raised bedsThe size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. Otherwise, you are bound to lose a truck, sooner or later. Source: Sergio Cha
I'm sorry for the demon I've become but you should be sorry for the angel you are not.0 -
Welcome TDQO - hope that you stay unlurked & share your journey with us. The raised beds sound a good idea.
Had my bonfire a day early - we get the sun back tomorrow, but I think it's to rain then. Not much of a bonfire as everything is wet through just some paperwork that is surplus to the tax return doings.
A big tree down the croft is snapped half way up - must have happened during the gales. When I look at it it's completely rotten through. It'll burn once it's logged & dried out, but I think it'll be like burning paper. Not much calorific value there.0 -

My other half is a feisty scotswoman, I often think about how cheap land is up that way but both of us have been spoiled by living in such a nice climate down here for so long. The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. You can get cheap land, but it depends where you want to live.
If you have in mind an area then you can get an idea of what it will cost you to buy some. We lived in a caravan for years as we built & are still not finished, but that was the way we worked it having a limited budget and health issues & life in general getting in the way of a speedy build.0 -

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh were the cult. There seems to be no link to our village in internet info, but they were definitely here.
HW is not coming back. Her place will be sold now to fund her care, so we'll eventuallyhave new neighbours in her stables/field. Whoever they might be, it's unlikely that they'll maintain the land as well as she did when she was able-bodied. :A
Sorry, I gave the wrong impression about Neighbourhood Watch. This is a low-crime area, but that means we shouldn't be complacent and ignore potential threats, especially those which have no specific geography, like cyber crime. We're such a small community that 9 of us can cover it completely, taking our info direct from one internet source, or from each other.
We considered high tech stuff, but a slip of paper through the door would still be most appropriate for our most vulnerable folk, who don't have computers and Faceache etc. Even for the others, a 'bright green note' on the mat may have more impact than an email among dozens. That's the idea, anyway.
A bit warmer today, but my good intentions went out the window again as there was a lunchtime fund-raiser at the village hall, with hot soup and cakes (there's always cakes!) so I was rather dozy after.:rotfl: The wood burner is really taking the load with the home heating, and with real sunshine back-up, these cold, clear days are no problem at all.
It's Sam's second birthday today. Easy to remember; a day before Choille Day!0 -
Thanks

I too have only known the West Country's weather, which is usually a walk in the park compared with that 'oop norf,' or even over in the far east (Anglia.) I had a couple of years in London's heat island, which seemed much milder than 500' up in Devon, but that was a long time ago now.
Like you, I'm not sure I'd risk something harsher.
The problem with land down here is that it's so expensive, it's only old fogeys like me, the privileged and those born on farms who get to own it....and I can't recommend the pensioner route!
But you don't need land to be on this thread, which is whatever people make of it.0 -
hi all
hope the weather is not defeating anyone !!
it has been mizzly rain constantly for the last 2 days.. dark and gloomy.. its not uber cold tho so that helps. the forest is a bog here...
the horses have been stampeding up the field for their hay this last week ... grass is useless .
im still trying to decide wether to run 2 of my mares with jim jam the stallion before he goes home... would mean early foal/foals but stables/shelters should be ok ?? of course we wont be able to part with them so we have to take into account there will be 2 more to the herd [10 at the mo]
the 2 I gave to LIR have come on in leaps and bounds [she adores them] the mare has improved so much and the foal is now same height as mom.. so glad she could take them as if they had stayed where they were they would not have had a chance.....
im always being asked to take horses in but it would be opening the flood gates. so many people just don't think it through and if I get one more "kids lost interest/cant afford the feed/ haven't got time" I will SCREAM !!
struggling to find a good home for Lakeland terrier pup, and shes so lovely... I will keep her with me until right home found ...
who'd have animogs eh ???
p.s. ctc's cat had ONE kitten and oh my word it is a stunning cutie ! hope she puts up a pic ...
its getting dark now and im off to feed my owl then im in for the night.. light the fire and cosy down...
stay safe all xx0 -
Whoopee! :j
I'm more than a bit excited, but trying not to get ahead of myself with the planningD&G ????
Sorry alfieDumfries and Galloway, I think, given Poppy's signature.
Thanks for clarifying
I would love a bit of land too, preferably on all 4 sides with me plonked in the middle away from civilisation :rotfl: Unfortunately, circumstances mean it's either rented to begin with or possibly buying a 1 or 2 bed house. We're hoping to have a look around areas in the Spring so I'll keep you all posted'A watched potato will never chit'...0
