We were off grid at previous place, but the windmill cost a fortune. If it goes wrong - like gets blown down in a gale & damaged it's so expensive.
We have a mains supply but it's not a full supply. It easily does us. We have our own water - I wouldn't go back to mains. Was on it briefly when we rented across the road. It does my skin in & the animals don't drink it - if animals won't touch it I won't.
We should put in a mini hydro scheme, but other things seem more pressing.
We are probably self sufficient in wood fuel. Just hauling it up the extreme sloping croft does you in a bit.0 -
Good to hear from you again choille. :j
Big hens those Orpingtons, but they can get fat and lazy. Keep them trim and they might escape when Mr Badger comes to call.
Moles are going beserk here too greenbee. I've given-up trying to trap them, as they're smarter than me.
Driving through Barnstaple a week ago, we spotted a roundabout on the main Atlantic Highway route, with three traffic lanes round it....and in the centre it was just thick with mole hills!Do you think they'll just keep interbreeding? :think:0 -
I had Orps before & they fairly eat the grub.
We too have moles although hairy cat has caught a fair few - not recently though.0 -
Must check mole traps... mine swim down the river!0

That explains it!
There's another molehill so I need to investigate today...0 -
Any advice on how to put off badgers? DD2's hubby laid a new lawn at the end of the garden in their new (to them) house and they've had badgers digging it up.0

Before I left the city I badger-proofed a small garden for a colleague, but I had to beef-up the protection below a fence with concrete because it just dug underneath. Eventually, it gave up, but as we were blocking its usual track, it really tried hard to get in.
Here I just try to ignore the obvious badger signs. They soon move along to pastures new on their track, so if they have a big dig in a place, they don't tend to return.
Conservatory bloke rang today, offering to repond to my last email in writing, as requested. I replied it was him who asked me to write all my concerns down in detail, only a few days ago. :undecided Maybe he's bi-polar, or something?
Anyway, I told him not to bother, as I'd spent most of today writing and he'll have a whole heap more to look at Monday! :rotfl:

Gosh its quiet on here! Hope everyone is ok. Spent this morning tackling the garden trying to tame it. Had a massive bonfire and will possibly need to have another one. Once all the rubbish is out of the way we'll need to rotavate and then reseed with grass seed. Anyone got any ideas on variety? Needs to be quite hard wearing (and cheap).
Going up north on Thursday night. Got lots of jobs booked in foe while we're there. New window to go in and the one that got damaged at Christmas to be looked at. Chimney swept and the boiler to be serviced. Also going to ask the local handy man how much it'll be to get the attic boarded out.
If the weathers kind may get to pootle in the garden or it'll be batten down the hatches. We're taking some work with us to do with ebay so it wont be a complete sitting on our bottoms doing nothing kind of week.

There's been a lot of mizzle here, but mild with it and calm. Last night, heading for a fish & chip supper, we found ourselves swerving for frogs on the A377. It's too early, but they don't have calendars.
I was all set to email Conservatory Man our news, but now he's sending the Chuckle Brothers over to see if they can find the leak in the morning, so I've held fire.
After they leave, he'll be told we're rejecting what they've built, as it's not to the spec on the plans. All details have gone by post to the MD. Let's see what he offers. We won't find out till we take the gloves off....:undecided
There was a big do for a retired couple we're friendly with in the village hall today. They're leaving after many years to be closer to their children. It was a great send-off, and like all events here, massively catered-for.
I thought, "Bang go all those New Year diets!" :rotfl:0
