pleased you have your woodstove sorted dave..
everywhere ive ever lived iv always had either a woodstove or open fire... I think it is def a cosy centre point ...

been very mild here during the day 5-9 degrees but drops like a bomb at night to -2 / -6 !!
Outside its about 3c at present, but in the house with just the wood stove on, we're fine at 22c in the living room and around 20c everywhere else....and it's only coasting! :D

    We should've done this sooner.:o

But how soon I forget!...all the holes in the building, no insulation....The old stove used to belt out a fair amount of heat too, but it cost a lot to run hard like that.

Nothing much worse than toothache, except maybe passing a kidney stone! Has 'he' given you anything for the pain? I recommend stuff you can't get in most chemists.....whisky, I think it's called... dab it on neat, gargle with a bit more, then drink a good mugful, watered down and heated up. :D

Wonder how choille is? They've had it rough up there. Down here, I had to get the mower out and do an hour on the grass today. Ridiculous!

hope your tooth is OK Alfie. Did your son's tooth problems get resolved?

Cold here tonight, so I put coal on the fire in the hope that it will provide residual heat overnight. It's a jet master, so while not as good as a stove, it's not as inefficient as a standard fireplace. Of course, the heating has cut out due to the heat so it may not have been the best option. Still, the oil tank (if the watchman is behaving) is more than half full so I won't freeze, and the zoned heating means that if it gets cold in the night only upstairs will switch itself on.

Have added some blankets and am making hot water bottles.

Just wish it would get cold enough for the moles to go to sleep. Must check the traps tomorrow.

sons tooth saga is ongoing !!
he is with another dentist now and he has had to take out the middle implant metal work [he never got as far as having the teeth put on them with ex dentist] as it was mis placed and couldn't be "buried" as it was insecure and could resurface ! he now has to have a bridge made for this middle tooth... he should have had a bone implant as it is weak it turns out !! ironic as they took out the 3rd tooth on ex's advice ?? so he now has to go through the whole procedure again.
we are sueing 1st dentist but will take ages... new procedures will amount to £5k plus .... hes already spent £5k on the useless tw*t that didn't do the job in the first place... its a nightmare !!

dave.. we have white heavy frost every morning here.
friend in Scotland [hotel man] has said they have had terrific gales over xmas so do hope choille is not struggling too much..

No frost here. :D I think we have Cornwall's weather, though if that's the case, I'm none too clear who's they have!

Haven't slept a wink. Conservatory bloke has just batted-back our last request for a site meeting and started requiring more stuff from us, like photographs and 'specific' details, as if what we've told him isn't specific enough. Perhaps he thinks he'll wear us down?

Like your son's dentist, once these guys smell a real problem they go all self protective and b*gger the poor consumer. However, it isn't going to look good for him if a third party reviews all this and discovers he's declined to even look at the job.

He doesn't know half of it yet. I may have been up most of the night, but I've been checking and double-checking everything, including his apologies for plans... Great joy! .....They havent built the roof that the plans show, never mind the fact that the manufacturer's fitting instruuctions have been carefully flouted, so we are definitely on a roll.

But as Dafty said a while ago, we have to consider what result we want from all this, and that's much harder. :(

    How's your toof?

Hi, I've posted here a long time ago. I have since lost my way a bit. I have just got back from a short break staying in a Shepherd's Hut. I loved it. It's the first time I have used a log burner. We cooked all our food on it. The stay has made my dream of a semi self sufficient lifestyle return.

    We stayed here: http://www.whitlinghambroadcampsite.com/shepherds-huts.html

So at the moment my dream is a shepherd's hut, additional shed for storage, green house, solar panels, log burner and kitchen garden. Not much to ask for but getting land for this purpose seems to be impossible. Unless anyone else knows different .......

I will continue in my 3 bed semi with small garden and allotment. I hope to read back more of the thread over the next few days and weeks.

Happy New Year - Just back on line after being off for what seems like ages- about three weeks. It's very slow & frustrating even though it's good to be back.

Sorry to hear of your fall Maggie - hope you are on the mend.

Stove looks great Dave - love the colour behind the stove - very Architectural. It looks good.

Alfie - Hope the tooth settles down - well the pain from it.

Not caught up with all posts as yet.

Got some little hens that will grew into massive uns - hopefully, if the badger don't get um. Some black & some blue Orpingtons & a splash Orpington cockerel. Have greatly missed having hens about so it's nice to have some again, just hope they live long enough to lay.

Weather cold today, but dry - at last & not blowing a hooley. It's been wild - man.

!!!!! Willow out - which is ridiculously early and a viola. Some raspberries out, but they are very bitter. But odd or wot?

    Hi Poppycat, welcome back. :hello:

Finding land to go off-grid is definitely hard. We've had a small encampment near the river a few miles from here for several years now, but it wouldn't be something I'd relish. The land is heavily tree shaded, wet and in a frost pocket, so it's not developed beyond a tent and some bender/yurty things. I think most passers-by probably think "There, but for the grace of God....." and being away from other housing, it's ignored.

Just outside the village, a substantial shed + 3 acres of rough land went on the market and sold quickly @£40k. I've suspected for years that someone lives there in summer, but apart from a small stream, it doesn't even have a water supply.

I'd be a bit claustrophobic in one of those shepherd's huts, I think, but fun for a holiday, like barges. :)
