Yes, our village is an extremely supportive community. Any person arriving here is given a welcome pack in a folder full of different things, like bus and surgery timetables, a copy of the village magazine, a leaflet about local walks etc etc and an invite to the next event, whatever it is.:A
We're well outside the village itself, but we count ourselves as belonging to it, even though the town is roughy the same distance. We can literally swing both ways, but the village is definitely 'home.'
Had a bit of a scare this morning. Went into the fields and couldn't see the sheep anywhere. Rushed down to the Dog End, which was obscured, but no, nothing! Then I spotted them, all laying down not far from the house, behind the neighbour's garden. Whew! :rotfl:0 -
That's amazing re the welcome pack. It's good to hear that there are some good communities about.0

We don't do the welcome pack, but we were visited by the Parish Council (not all at once), the vicar, the milkman and the neighbours. Then, finding out I liked gardening, the neighbouring village garden club members all came round at once (both of them
), saying their need was, obviously, greater than that of my village with a functioning garden club, and they do have the better pub to meet in... I do spread between the two villages, so they weren't entirely trespassing.
Mind you, I seem to be social (despite my complete antisocial personality ). There are fourteen houses on our side of the village and, after being here six months, I have found out I am the only person living in those fourteen to have been inside all of them for a cuppa or equivalent (often being a bit more Teachers than Tetley). I'm just nosy and, realising some of the old codgers who don't/can't go out much know the recent(ish) history of this house, I thought I'd invade their privacy. They seemed to love to chat and chat and chat and ...
Everybody (and I do mean every single one) of those fourteen houses are just so glad the previous people moved out, we seem to be welcomed with open bottles wherever we poke our noses.
Well, the vicar left a bit disappointed, as I had to admit that I was not only an atheist, but was a vague friend of the arch-atheist himself. Still, I do love old churches and, when I next saw him, did volunteer the donkeys for Easter next year.
There were prettier villages when we were looking where to buy, even if this was possibly the prettiest house (Edit: no, it wasn't. But, interesting I plump for it being so....). One thing that swung us was, before we bought, we came to the village fete, in the pouring rain. It was so wet, the fire brigade were pulling vehicles of the playing field at the end of it all. But, to the end it went, damp waffles and crepes, soaking bouncy castle, smoking sausages in squiffy buns, and a very, very soggy dog show. We were welcomed as passing visitors. Made up our minds we'd like to live here....
It is so wet here, I have given up, and am unpacking another room of boxes. Yep, still loads to go. Visitors (neighbours from four house moves ago) coming tomorrow @11, so work must be done... hence a cuppa with MSE0 -
hi all...
wow what a thunder/lightening storm we had here last night ! the sky was magical !
but the resident stallion in the farm field behind me was not so impressed ! weve had him here to eat down grass /fatten him up for man who broke ruby to drive. hes a stunning big 2 yr old black cob. he bust through the fence and went walk/trot/canter about in neighbouring fields... every time I saw him and set off in that direction, navigating fences/hedges etc... he had disappeared !! ?? this was from 7.45 am ... I eventually spotted him yet again and went in for the capture... he really is TALL and he came running towards me ,with no where to go, I had to stay brave.. I stood my ground and caught him [easily !] ... he is such a big baby he has to hold the lead rein ! [like a dog holds his lead] he "plays" with fence posts and planks of wood like a dog too !
anyway I put him back in the farm courtyard, will check/fix fence tomorrow.
other than that we escaped any damage here but further inland they had massive floods..0 -
Well, that was exciting overnight.....
..... Our water meadow flooded spectacularly.
In other, minor, news, "...don't panic, don't panic...."
Looks like I may be moving to the USA in the near future..... it's a long commute...
Off to hug a donkey, and have a paddle. And can someone wake Dave; they still haven't returned their voting down there, lazy bunch having a lie-in....:p0 -
Zzzzzzzzz.......whasssaaaat? Somebody say something? :coffee:
Oh, that.....no idea, but from what people have said to me, us'll be 'outies' yer.
But now I look at it, we're outies everywhere! :eek:0 -
In other news, no storms here, or even much rain, but we had so many power outages yesterday, I lost count. By the time we went to the village hall to vote, the yellow electricity helicopter (this time labelled correctly) was hovering overhead checking all the lines.
Sure enough, just as soon as it was dark, off went the power again. Then, nothing further as I watched the Referendum prog, or pretended to. I woke up at silly o'clock to find DW had stuck a blanket over me.
Hopefully, that was them, fixing it last night. Our German ovens require us to go through a complex options procedure after every cut before they will work again properly, although who knows, they probably have Brexit default built into a chip somewhere and won't work at all now......:(
Got rid of another tonne (or is that now 20cwt?:rotfl:) rubble last night. No one saw us. Who knows, this could become a regular run....
Is the move permanent, Dafty, or do you get home weekends for good behaviour?0 -
"We" voted extreme out where I live (81% I believe. edit, nope, that's Fenland, and they marry their uncles there) and extreme in where I work....
I feel schizophrenic.....
The overnight market change suggest this will be more than just a rocky road, possibly a chain-gang working on the roads, Alabamy-style.
But, donkeys followed me around as I paddled, youngest holding my sleeve in his lips, horses peacefully grazed on, and marsh harrier is up in the clouds already.... Bees are out on the elder, hare in top field, wife sleeping soundly while I "work"...:rotfl:
So, I don't care, let the lunatics take over the asylum
Oh, the move... Means I'm plugged into a different server, and change the desktop wallpaper. I might get a pay rise to match USA rates (unlikely), and work from lunchtime to late teatime. It might also mean about 500 million pounds of business moves from the UK to Europe and the US, but who cares about that?Won't affect anyone will it? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Other than on the telly/radio/internet, it is a truly beautiful day. Sunny, warm, breezy, clear. I shall ignore everything outside my perimeter, and all will be well.
Cessation, that's the answer. Duxit... Dafxit, DaffyDuxit. Close the borders, shut the farm gates, evict the migratory birds, set up egg trading deal with Western Samoa, all will be well....
Can you tell who stayed up all night, drinking coffee?:p0 -
I wonder if the politicians ever realise how matters of huge import, such as this, are often decided in very random ways.
Take yesterday; an undecided friend explained that what finally pushed them over the edge was an EU directive on orange flashing warning lamps. Apparently, the lamp on their work truck had to be changed because it went "Flash, flash, flash" and not "Flash, flash, f-l-a-s-h, flash, flash, f-l-a-s-h"
Cost them a bit. Cost an 'In.' vote too.0 -
lovely morning here...
I took my lead from friends who have a huge [self built, self funded] multi national company who have slowly been thwarted by "bods who KNOW best"....
we had an interesting letter in our local paper from an "old boy" who simply said "i remember the promises back in the day to GO IN "....... still waiting....
but still , the sun is out today and I have a fence to fix0
