Davesnave.. We are having the general builder to put in the new stairs, floors and ceilings and stud walls, and we will be doing the rest. We will run the electrical cables to the sockets etc, and then the electrician can hard wire them in etc.. Same with the plumbing, we will lay/ run the pipework, for water / waste etc and then the plumber can just attach it all up etc..

Davesnave last year, you mentioned about the plant label software you use..what was it again?? And the printer???
    .
    Sounds like a plan! :T

We specified stronger stud walls (more noggins) and used two sheets of sound absorbent plasterboard each side, plus 100mm of sound insulation roll on the inside. This pushed the price up, but it's worked well, as the walls sound as 'dead' as the old block ones, if not more so.

We aren't big fans of stud partitions like the hollow, flimsy ones in my Dad's old bungalow, but there was no way we could replace all the old block work we demolished with new. Few of our internal walls are load-bearing: something we knew right from the first viewing. Makes a hellava difference when you're re-organising the inside! ;)

Regarding plant labelling, I don't think I'm much of an authority on how to do that cheaply! :o The printer that's replaced ours, is this:

    http://www.thermalprinterservices.co.uk/thermal-label-printers/b-sx5t?gclid=CMLXw8H4rsoCFUGD2wodFoMLcQ

The software company we used has been taken over by IML
but they still sell the labelling package we use, which is HLS,
    on this page:
    http://www.iml-international.com/systems-division/software

Our software cost around £250 as an upgrade from a previous version we used on old dot matrix printers (which are useless for long term labels) We managed to flog our old system for £125, so that wasn't too bad.

I expect the software is now at least double the price we paid, and there's no way to copy it effectively, as each copy must be unlocked.....otherwise it produces gobbledegook. Stands to reason, but it's extremely basic software at a hugely inflated price for what it is.:(

When we started out, we had an old lady with a pencil doing our labels. She was much cheaper and didn't get jammed or crash like a computer/printer, but eventually she couldn't keep up! :rotfl:

Maybe the pencil looks more attractive right now??? :D

Hi everyone, I am reading and keeping up but there isn't much going on to tell you all about. So I am keeping up with all of your news and thinking of you all.

I recently finished paying off a loan we had to take when our roof decided to let water in...about four times! So that has been a big thing for me as I overpaid and did it in 14 months instead of three years. I am now planning to save enough money each month that it will give me an idea of what it would be like to only work 4 days not 5. I aim to do it for 6 months hen review. However, realistically I know I need to continue working full time even though it is really getting to me now.

In terms of the garden we have had some big changes and if I can get photobucket to work properly later on this iPad I will post some pics. It's been quite a radical change and I won't be replanting until this autumn so I can improve the soil, but the garden is so much lighter now. But I feel bad as the large conifers we removed were good cover for the birds and hedgehogs. But I will try to replace with something's for them too. I may be seeking advice!

It's cold here this morning, just 1 degrees. We have had an icing sugar sprinkle of snow and it's now doing that most British of drizzling so it doesn't look like it's raining but it soaks you.

    Have a good Sunday everyone,

Ended up with about 10 cm of snow here so was knocking it off the bamboos and other shrubs which were rather bent over.

I'm thinking I'll need to replace the ceanothus, the California lilac just isn't happy in Glasgow :( It was all twigs today and hardly flowered at all last year. Lidl are doing Kilmarnock Willow for £7.99 but I'm not sure, I think these weeping form trees are a bit 'twee'.

Definitely ! (or defiantly for those with over-active spell checkers...:rotfl:)
  • That's settled it then! Although with the fastigate rowan on one side and a weeping willow on the other, my garden would have a 'one up, one down' horticultural joke.

I noticed the willow in LIDLs - they are cheap. I am impressed with their shrubs & trees |& especially the prices - they look good quality & condition.

Been off-line as the electric flickered yesterday & then it went off, but found a spare hub & that's done the trick - strange that it did that. Old messages that have been deleted are appearing back on 1571 - it's all a tat twi-light zone, but guess the old exchange needs re doing.

Is M & S open on a Sunday? Our nearest one is 70 miles away, but that does sound like you took a while getting there.

    Lovely geese walk CTC.

Cold as anything here & the Rayburn is no where near heating the kitchen & the rads are cold - a disaster & probably a very expensive one.
