A close neighbour is getting a wood burning stove & I'm dreading it already. Hopefully they will know or be advised not to burn green or badly seasoned wood. I really do sound like an old grump don't I :o I'm not, I think I just need to be in a less populated area, away from people!! .

The problem is that dry wood takes 2 years to produce and it's just not easily available in many areas. People could buy kiln dried by the pallet, but again, it's knowing about it, and the delivery and storage is a problem for many too.

Here, I get wood that's 'OK,' at about 12- 18 months seasoned. I can make it 'good' by storing it from spring till now...but we have the space to do that. :D

Wood burners are not suited to towns, especially as it's possible to have really good gas coal fires which make no mess and need no tending....but just try telling that to city man, who wants to connect with his primitive roots! :rotfl:

Just remember a 'less populated area' might be like this; twenty miles to decent shops and supermarkets!

I must admit I could sit & stare at real flames for hours, so do 'get' where city man is coming from. I'll wait until I'm in the middle of nowhere before I get a coal fire/woodburner/multi-fuel stove etc.

Twenty miles to decent shops & supermarkets could mean twenty miles away from other people. At the moment that sounds like bliss!! :rotfl: I know I need to have my sensible head on though when we do move.

A friend posted a link on Faceache this afternoon about toxic smog coming to the UK, don't know if it's the same thing maggie?

I was checking possibility of flooding in North Wales over next few days. Found this about toxic smog and blood rain. Though a site for Wales, it does give UK wide map.

    Bit of a U turn, methinks. ;)

They won't come here, though. Exmoor & Dartmoor are bereft of oil shale, I think. All we have is muck & wind. :o

    Lovely puddy cats Alfie.

    So another year older, sigh.

Poor DS1s dog got a piece of bone stuck across the roof of her mouth. Luckily OH managed to get it out, gosh I bet she was relieved.

Beautiful kitties alfie, and yes what huge ears!! :D I was just wondering the other day why big cats (lions/lionesses) have such small ears...

Can I ask daydreamers about air quality where they live. These dank, damp days seems to have dragged the air pollution around here down & I'm noticing it on my chest more :( I've also noticed a heavy smell of (wood??) smoke, especially on an evening, so I'm guessing there's a few more people with woodburners this year. I don't mind, I'd love something like that myself, but I think when you live in close proximity to other houses as I do, it all becomes a bit too concentrated. Whatever happened to Smoke-Free Zones, do they still exist??

Daydreamer hopes & ambitions for the future:
    • To live somewhere with clean air
    • To live somewhere with limited light pollution (I love stargazing)
    • To have a garden big enough to grow trees, especially fruit trees
    • To have a garden big enough for a good sized vegetable/fruit plot
    • To have a garden big enough for some chooks
Sorry, forgot to say welcome to fuddle

Also wondering where/how Better Days is??
Lions (Pantera leo) have excellent hearing and rely on it heavily when stalking prey, which may be obscured by dense vegetation. However, as many of their prey species have good eyesight, lions cannot allow their ears to betray their camouflage. Accordingly, lions have evolved relatively rounded ears that feature shaggy fur, which helps to keep their ears hidden. Lions also feature black markings on the back of their ears, which may help these pack hunters to follow each other through the tall grass

You do get real flames on a proper gas coal/log fire. We had one at the old place. I'll see if I can upload a piccie later. :)

Yay! Just won a ride-on on the 'bay. As you lot were saying it was pants just now, I thought I'd take a look..... and there was something suitable for our tidy lawns, probably not the orchards though. So, with 10 seconds left, I bid a sensible price and it's mine. :D Great Christmas pressie!
