Beautiful work FK you are very talented :D

Ok I need DIY advice and you are all a font of knowledge! I also need to confess that I asked this before and did not record the advice :o

We have wooden indoor window frames and they need to be sanded and treated however after sanding for ages by hand I am beginning to think that I am doing something wrong as it made little to no difference. What is the [STRIKE]quickest [/STRIKE] best way of sanding and treating them?

  • Flipping heck!!! What a wild and windy morning, the rain is coming down sidwards ...

Eleectrickedy just went out for about 10 mins..so fingers crossed it doesn't go out again..

Had/ got a major water pouring down on of the walls at the ranch, so had to take a plasterboard off the sloping ceiling, take out the insulation board to find the leak, goo job we hadn't had it plastered, as we would have ruined most of the ceiling, at least we could just unscrew those boards.. It looks as though the rain had worked its way between and under some slates, and was dripping off a cross length of batoning that the saispd tiles were attached to, so hubby has put some extra bits of slate underneath to see if the will cure it..

Its making us think now, should we lay off putting putting stuff up on the walls for a bit longer( insulation and boarding it etc.. As if this wall had been insulated and boarded as well, we would never had noticed the water running down the wall until it had done loads of damage!

LIR you have an old house, do you find things like this happening???

You don't need an old house; a low profile roof will sometimes allow wind to blow water backwards on the underside of tiles, and if the sarking felt isn't quite right, or there isn't any...

It's always best to leave new areas of roofing and related works till you can see how they stand up to really testing weather.

We have issues with the old conservatory after longer periods of good weather, as the wood shrinks and lets the first of the wet weather straight through. Then it swells up again and all is better...Can't say "well," as its a disaster zone!

Anyone used Higgledy before? OH would like a cut flower garden this year and I was going to treat him to the seeds for Christmas. They have a bee friendly collection which looks ideal.

However I am open to suggestions of other suppliers and I can package them up myself.

Very! :T I understand what you meant now about sinks. :)

I don't know if you were on your travels, FK, but we did resolve our splashback problems. DW found some tiles she liked, and as they were about 10x cheaper than the splashback, I decided I liked them too! :D

Spoke with my very ill ex-GF yesterday. She was determined to ring me, and not with any help from her carer! I found it difficult to understand everything she said, but we were nattering for 3/4 hour, so it wasn't that difficult. :)

Rummer, you are using different grades of sandpaper on your windows? I'd start with something like 80 grade and work down to 180 for finishing. Don't economise on sandpaper (I use aluminium oxide, I think) as good stuff lasts longer anyway.

As for the seeds, check Sarah Raven's site for ideas, then find them cheaper elsewhere!

You could also try my old mate Derry, for example. I bought stuff from her this week. Not the cheapest either, but at least you know hers is harvested fresh, which is absolutely crucial for some plants, hence her 'sow nows.'

She's out of stock of the catalogue at present. Probably printing next year's.
  • Thank you all for the lovely comments! I was kind of bewitched when I first saw the things my teacher was making, and I just had to learn, but like all these things now I know how to do it I'm less amazed, and I shouldn't be!

Alfie there's no glass blowing, I haven't tried that at all, yet! The sink is shaped from a flat piece of glass in the kiln, everything else is done to the glass or mirror in its original state. I've picked up the equipment and materials I didn't have, all locally too, God bless machine mart! so I can now replicate the processes at home, just need to make a bit more room....we're sorting out the wood store next to my studio, where a load of logs and big bits are. that'll be my messy outdoor area for the sandblasting and also for using the tile cutter which makes a hell of a mess!

We also lost power for a few minutes this morning, thankfully the tea was just made! By the time I found the step ladders to check our fuse board the power was back on. Strange!

Our neighbours metal shed blew over today, we had to laugh! You could see The door wasn't closed tight at the bottom and it kept lifting and falling with a crash til eventually it went completely! He's got it upright again and slightly out of the wind but because they are so much higher than us I can see it coming over into our place if the wind picks up again. Either that or trash his car!

We've got a few leaks in the garage/studio roof, still, I think we need to replace the screws with deeper ones, the wind may have been getting under and lifting slightly, enough to lose the tight seal with the rubber washers anyway. PITA!

The garden is looking pretty pants lately, just a few nasturtiums, a perennial wallflower and a hydrangea hanging in there! If I get a chance I'll have a good tidy up of all the weeds and put it to bed til the spring.

Good tip Dave about Sarah Raven, it is expensive! I think next year rather than try lots of varieties (and never getting round to planting them all out!) I might just pick up one of the boxes of cheap cut flower annual mixes and sprinkle them about....

Can't get too excited about gardening in this weather, all I can think about is lighting the fire and getting snuggled up on the sofa!
  • FK, the electric went off here too for about 10 mins this morning, and funny enough I had just made a brew too lol

Weather is still pants , and we had a leaky roof here too earlier, more slates had blown off/ moved, so hubby just done the basics to stop the leak..

Hubby is up the ranch now doing some more pointing inside the house, and I am doing a LOAD of cooking, and trying to use up stuff in the freezer and cupboards..
Got an old pack of cupcake mix .. And a few bananas that are starting to look a bit dodgy, so will mash them up, and add them to the cake mix..

Did buy a pumpkin to make soup with a while back from Morrison's for 50p, didn't get round to it, so just took all the seeds out of it, and the pigs can have the rest, so will dry the seeds and have a go sowing them next spring..

Just found out Lola goes mad for boiled quail eggs!!!! ( boiled a LOAD of them too to snack on etc)

Rummer, I've used Higgledy seeds, and so has my friend DoveGreyReader. Had some great california poppies and marigolds this year, but something ate the cornflowers and scabious I direct planted at the lottie. Next year I'll be planting some of the stuff in those square plastic thingies to start them off. And also nemaslug the lottie and garden before planting out - lost all my sunflower seedlings at lottie to the slugs. It's been a hard year for us here, and I didn't get to plant loads of seeds that I bought. :( We both just had too much going on in the Spring at planting time.

But we've had some good times since, we have a GrandDaughter who is now 6 weeks old, we went to stay in London and arrived the day she was 2 weeks old and stayed till she was nearly 4 weeks. :j

Hi all - CTC - Should you give a dog eggs? I dread to think what her farts are like......
    Hope the leak is fixed.

FK - beautiful stuff. Do you do all of this to sell? I would think that it is very satisfying creating such wonderful things. I love the mirror - it looks like a giant brooch.

Dave - good for you being in touch with your ex. How nice you are. It will be good for her to hear from folks she hasn't done in a while - very comforting.

I am feeling the Winter creep - weather just eploded into torrential down pours & really cold after the mild spell.

Trailed into see about the computer, but he hasn't fixed it yet. He wanted us to wait around for a couple of hours, but I really doidn't want to as I am really not happy as it's weeks he's had it.
