Hope everyone enjoyed the extra hour in bed :)

Weather here is worst than after 'Gonzalo' hit with stronger gusts of wind and rain squalls. I'll probably be dark by 4pm :(

I was hoping to lift the remaining cannas and plant the end-of-season bulbs that come from crocus on Friday, but that looks unlikely unless the rain keeps off.

Just been reviewing the garden at the end of the season. I think the plants that did least to earn their keep were the siberian iris. All I saw was a lot of foliage and a few flowers that didn't last. The space they take up in the border hasn't been repaid, so they'll be out unless they do the biz next Spring.

I moved my biggest pot of cannas into the conservatory and found the clay has a big crack - not frost, just the pressure of the roots after 3 years...

P.S. Did anyone watch "Big Dreams, Small Spaces" last week (or on iPlayer)?

Phoebe, good to hear from you, and your great news of selling so fast!:beer:

1/4 acre is fine. That's about what we used to have, and we ran a business on it!

The new garden sounds very exciting, especially the bit about the bare bones beneath. We hoped for something like that here, but all we found were labels! :rotfl:

    Thanks Dave :D

Yes, we're really excited about the garden, although we need to get 43m of fencing fitted across the rear boundary to contain the dogs before moving in - luckily we don't need to do the whole perimeter :o

I'm especially thrilled with the wonderful wisteria which covers the width of the garden frontage, including trailing across a verandah (a feature I've always longed for!), but am fearful that like yourself and Mrs Davesnave, we might end up with mainly labels/dead plants.....hopefully not though! We are taking between 60 and 70 plants in pots (some are huge) anyway so will have a few things ready to plug any gaps!

There are quite a lot of trees in the garden, including specimen firs etc - the house is in a conservation area covered by an article 4 (2) direction, meaning PP is required before any can be felled/lopped, I believe - but we love them and wouldn't want to change them as they give a magical, forest-like ambience to the garden :)

There has been very little 'weather' here; just a grey day with virtually the same temperature from dawn to early dusk, but it hasn't been cold - I'm still in shirtsleeves. :D

Mind you, lifting all the tiles we shall need, up the ladder and onto the scaffolding walkway, kept both of us warm! Tomorrow looks OK, so they should all be in situ by this time on Tuesday. :)

In mid afternoon, Mr Rod showed-up, along with another gentleman, who had the largest tractor and trailer I've ever seen! They put the huge mound of spare stone and soil into the trailer and away it went, groaning a bit as there were many tonnes. I couldn't understand why they didn't split the load, till I found out the stuff was going to a place over 6 miles away. The tractor seemed to be struggling, just getting out of here, but whichever way you go, there are steep hills en-route to that location.

So, the field is back to normal, the digger has gone and we are still awaiting sheep....:)

Well the rain never stopped for more than 5 minutes :( The field drains I installed have been pouring all day...

More pleasingly, this orchid has been flowering for ages and I see a 2nd floor spike is coming up. Always a bit hit and miss with orchids, this one is in front of NE facing window in the lounge so I guess it's not keen on direct sunlight. From memory I bought it discounted when it's flowers were 'over' and cut down the old flower spike.

Sold all my eBay stuff! :D

Yesterday, I received an eBay email from the guy who bought the fire surround, saying that he will pay cash on pick-up, but he already did that last week....?

Is this some ploy to fool ebay that I just don't understand, or a mistake? I'm not very Bay- savvy yet. :o
