think I would be pithd off too Alfie..

Choille, nice to hear you got some nice weather, even if it ws frosty this morning... at least its dry for you...

totally understand your frustration re- house...

I think if builders/tradesmen know you are doing things as and when the funds allow, they sort of do things at their pace..

With us, it seems as though its all or nothing... work done, and then a lull,

I am totally confused re-broad beans lol... how dwarf if 'dwarf' re- Sutton or am I better off with bunyards? or the similar ones on real seeds? so then I can just keep seeds for te following year?

are they like peas or runner beans ? once picked that's it, or do they continue to produce more, the more you pick??

I have never grown broad beans as its only me that likes htem, but I was thinking of growing a load to sell on, ( not the plants, but the beans)

Ground has dried sufficiently to let me do first serious gardening this year :j Only casualty seems to be a French lavender which got too wet.

Mostly a lot of 'editing' to move plants about, last year I used numerous carex sedges and ladies mantle to quickly fill-in borders. Moved these to create space for more interesting plants.

Also moved a lot of bearded iris which had been left in a totally unsuitable, shaded area into full sun.

One plant surprised me, I had a Centaurea macrocephala (giant knapweed) in the shade and it didn't flower so I divided it, but left one piece lying on ground at the back of the border. Anyway, found it today and it was showing new growth and roots, so planted it. Centaurea montana, the perennial coneflower, grows very well with me, so am hoping the macrocephala will too in the sun.

Also took about 3' off my twisted willow before it shoots up again, stuck a few of the prunings in the ground to see of they'll take.

    Hello Everyone

Glad the weather has picked up for you Choille :D
Dave I think you have started sowing without me :naughty:
Well I was taken to the garden centre for mothers day today and I got a selection of herbs to fill the holes that I created last year :). I got some fennel, borage, hyssop and two types of mint. They could have been grown from seed but given my track record I just bought them.

Tomorrow I am going to get a wee heap of things started in the hallway as I haven't had time to get the greenhouse cleared and it is missing glass (still :o) although I am going to remedy that this year.

The garden is really strating to come to life now which is lovely :D The two bargain bleeding hearts that I bought last year have come back up as has the fritillaria. The sunny bed is doing less well as it currently has a fallen fence on top of it that we are patiently waiting for our neighbours to repair. Hopefully now the weather is a bit more settled they will get on to it soon, before my alliums are crushed :(

This week I am going to order my raspberry collection :j

I will try to post more often.....

Dwarf broad beans don't produce as well as the taller varieties CTC, but I grow them here because we don't have much space. They produce flowers all up the stems and these become the bean pods (which is why the tall kinds produce more). Once you pick them, that is it - they don't flower and set again like runner beans, but the ones at the bottoms of the stems are ready to pick before those further up, which stretches the picking season out a bit, if that makes sense.

I can't see why it would't be a good idea to grow them to sell, as they are expensive in the shops. Any that didn't sell could be frozen. I think they probably freeze better than any other vegetable :) They do take up quite a bit of ground though, and probably don't produce as much as French or runner beans do.

Well, Pete showed up with a great load of logs near dusk. They'll be fine, this time next year. :rotfl:

While we were unloading, Pete asked, "You wouldn't happen to have an odd £30 -40K just lying about after your renovations, would you?"

I said, no, I didn't think it was likely.

    "That's a pity!"

It turns out that the fishing we have both been enjoying is under threat now, as the nonogenarian owner passed away last week. :(

It's possible that his property will be sold with the fishing, but it might be sold off separately by the beneficiaries of the will.....and there are some people Pete isn't keen to have on his land. His last comment, "Access could be tricky, mind!" ;)

I'm sure I mentioned sowing seeds around the end of February, Rummer.:D

It's early enough now anyhoo. Hasn't been the best of weather up your way...;)
