I know its expensive in the supermarket for a few sticks, but in reality how much can you sell rhubarb for??

No idea, as we've only just planted our out in the past 6 months, but we gave away loads of crowns.

We might sell some in this country market that's starting up in a few weeks time, I suppose.

I just go on-line, see what the supermarkets are charging and then undercut them by a good amount. Did that for squash and they all went. :)
  • good idea, when the time comes that I might/will have some surplus, will see what the supermarkets are charging at the time.

was talking to the fencing guy yesterday, when they were just finishing clearing the garden plot, and he was saying he knew someone who only grew runner beans on his plot/land and had a table at a market, and only sold runner beans that he picked on the morning of the market.. done really well by all accounts... ( or it could have been them thinking selling a few, was doing really well lol)

the thing is we got approved weighing scales that are in increments of 2gms anyway for work, so its a thought... flowers, runner beans, mangy toos and rhubarb.. now there's a mixture lol..and a few little eggs thrown in the mix lol

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Cut flowers.......

You are going to do sweet peas I assume? Sweet pea posies might not go for much but they are attractive, draw people in and though not a huge selling price they don't cost much to start either!

    how old are your parent??

94 and 92 so they've done pretty well to remain in their own home. While my dad has terrible short term memory and mum very limited in mobility, they've not had long stays in hospital or suffered mini-strokes or the like.

Anyhow, just been on the phone to the out-of-hours care so should get a plan from Monday while I see them today/Sun. Looks like planting those lithop seeds may have to wait a while.

Yes, I love sweet peas, didn't grow any last year, but this year will be growing a load, even if they are just for me. the old fashioned high perfume ones..

which reminds me, better get ordering seeds rather quickly lol.

Some of us older ones have already been on that journey.

From experience, I'd say it's a fairly depressing task, but there really are some good places out there.....It's just finding them.

.....and some younger ones too, unfortunately Dave :(

I'm (just) 48 and we had to go through this in 2012 with my parents who were relatively old by the standard of the day when they had me, an only child.

My dad (84 in 2012) had been caring for my mum (then 82) who has Alzheimer's for some time and refused all outside help that we arranged/suggested. In the end a bad fall after a series of UTIs and mini strokes put him in hospital at which point it was obvious they couldn't return to their marital home of forty-odd years.

Initially the plan was to find a home for mum, sell their house and purchase a flat (sheltered/assisted living) for my dad, but it soon became apparent that my dad was now in a worse state than mum......he was later diagnosed with Vascular Dementia.

We eventually found a nursing home where they could be together and we had to sell their house - willed to our DS, their beloved only grandchild - to pay the extortionate fees.

Soon after moving in my dad became too disruptive and they had to separate them, moving dad to their secure wing. He passed away in 2014 after a massive stroke and sadly during the eighteen months they were in the home, they rarely saw or recognised each other :(

Whilst all this was going on DH's dad was also diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and he too passed away aged 81 in 2013......

DH and I have been absolutely run ragged with the whole stress of dealing with three parents with Dementia at once.

Last year my mum lost 22% of her body weight as she refuses to eat most things, but despite this and her severe dementia, she won't give up. She is 85 now so may have many years ahead of her.

I feel for you IHS. Sending {{{hugs}}} to you :A

Choosing a care home for my mother was one of the worst things we (my sister and me) have had to do. Mum has Alzheimer's and just over two years ago (at the age of 87) it was impossible for her to remain in her own home.

We were given a list of approved care homes by social services. This we compared with the reports on the homes by the Scottish Care Commission which we found on line. We chose to visit about 10 establishments armed with a list of questions. It was apparent from the off that several were 'not right'. Some were not suitable in that Mum could 'escape' and one told us that Mum did not meet their criteria. In the end Mum was an emergency admission to the care home she is still in - privately run, fantastic staff, very homely.

If I can offer any other advice, let me know.

Spent a couple of hours tidying the front garden before the wind and rain returns tonight! Loads of Tete a Tete in bud and some are flowering. I am lethal with a hoe but I have turned the soil over with my long-handled weeding fork and got rid of the debris which has improved the general look of the garden greatly.

When I worked a couple of colleagues who had allotments used to bring in excess produce to sell - proceeds to charity. For some reason rhubarb was never popular. I used to buy loads because I was always happy to have some in the freezer for crumbles etc. I think I paid something like 50p for 10 stalks. OH was a bit perturbed when I came home one day with about 10 bundles!
