BD..... now i would just get a wire attatchment on a drill and beat the beegeebers out of the paint on there and leave the brick with remnants of the paint on in places.. so it looks like the paint has worn/fell off. ..... but thats me0

Advice please.
We have a brick fireplace with a stove fitted. The brick has been painted and doesn't look very nice. I was going to get it plastered, but that money now needs to be spent on the leaking chimney:(:(
So we'll re-paint the brick. What paint would you recommend, do I need a special sort of paint? (BTW - that paper went pretty soon after we moved in - it made the room so dark ) There is also a dark wood mantlepiece, which I think we will just paint white for now.
I imagine something like this would be really pricey to do a whole chimney breast:

This article says use an oil based paint as primer and then a latex paint:
http://www.bhg.com/decorating/fireplace/styles/how-to-paint-a-brick-fireplace/
But there don't seem to be many of those this side of the big pond, so I'd go for a satin finish myself. Done a few radiators with that in my time.
You may have to choose a different primer if going satin, but then do you really need one? The bricks are already painted.0 -

BD - I would have someone cement over the brick or rip it out, but that's me.
I also wouldn't have a stove recessed as it wastes heat, but that is me again.
Hail showers here & is nasty out.0 -

Light snow showers this morning. Blackbirds waiting for me to throw out some seed, the colder it is the more blackbirds are waiting
Thanks everyone for the suggestions re the fireplace.
Dave, that fireplace stone paint looks interesting, never seen it before, must admit I'm tempted, as I think it would give a nice texture, I'll send off for a sample to see what the colours are like. ETA even sold on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fireplace-Stone-Coating-Effect-Limestone/dp/B007SB5FXQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
choille with hindsight I probably wouldn't have the stove so recessed, you live and learn! We did it like that at the time as it was cheaper. On the plus side the chimney does make a great thermal store and keep the room warmer overnight.
I did wonder LIR if we could just paint with the same stuff as the rest of the room. That would be the easiest and cheapest option. alfie I'd probably do as you suggest with a drill if the bricks were a nice red colour, but unfortunately they're a sort of buff yellow which I don't like much, and wouldn't give enough contrast with the paint. It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

If there is enough height in the alcove you could get a stove fan. We have one, OH was skeptical but it does work.

YES I AGREE... we went into a woodburner shop, and he had 2 of them on the top of a modern tubular style log burner, and those fans really did make a diff.. so when we eventually get this done up the ranch we are def getting them.
the guy in the shop did say his ones were better, and not the cheap import from china, but that could have just been a sales patter, so you buy his lol..Work to live= not live to work0
