Tried these in pots more than once but never been successful. More than likely neglect on my part! I believe they make good dried flowers.
I emailed someone on ebay selling them, to ask if it too late to plant them, and they said no you can plant them from October through to end of winter, they need a cold snap, and they said they don't flower if you try and grow then in a warm greenhouse..
so going to give them a go, also I have watched a youtube video on them, and you supposed to soak them over night, or until they triple in size before planting..Work to live= not live to work0 -

Similar to anemone corms then. I soak them before planting. Only tried the ranunculas from plug plants. Hope they are successful for you.0 -

In what way did yours fail?? no flowers, or just didn't grow on?
I am going to suck it and see with them..
Choille I bought the book you had from amazon, along with another book, so before everyone wakes up, I have just lit the fire, made a cuppa, and going to snuggle on the sofa and have a flick through...
I REALLY do need to get my butt into gear this year, as we start well with all the gardening etc, and then work/other things get in the way..
This has got to be the year where we find our feet on what small incomes we can get from diff activities on the ranch.. to see if it can bring in a few pennies here and there..
We class the wood from the land a sort of income, instead of money income, its a wood income lol.. hope that makes sense..Work to live= not live to work0 -

It was a few years ago now CTC but if I remember correctly they just 'sat' in the pots doing nothing. Pots were well drained. It could of course been one of those summers where the vagaries of weather wasn't conducive to growing bedding plants. Had a few seasons like that!
Lovely bright clear morning here. Might do a bit more in the garden before the garden bin gets emptied tomorrow. My fuschias desperately need pruned down but worried they won't like it!0 -
I don't want to pee on the parade, but I wouldn't go overboard for cutting varieties of ranunculus before actually trying them in your soil and conditions, CTC.
If they are so great, why doesn't the RHS list them in its plant section?
The only UK info I can find is from places that sell them. I'm a suspicious burger, so that puts them in doubt.
Now, on the other hand, alstroemerias.......:cool:0 -
Cut flowers are one of the most lucrative crops for places like farmers' markets, but like producing any other product, (pork for example!) they need a lot of input.
Firstly, you need to appraise your plot and facilities honestly before you can choose what to grow. Up here, for example, I'm on great soil with wall-to-wall sunlight and I have some basic protection in the polytunnel. It's not a frost pocket so that's good too.
On the other hand, if I were to start growing cut flowers here, I'd have only one place to put the beds, which is behind the elm hedge. Otherwise, being at 500', it wouldn't be too long before taller flowers were needing huge amounts of staking, or being flattened. :eek:In time, I could grow more shelter, or I could cut to the chase and build wind reducing barriers....at a cost.
So, I'd know all those things before I planted anything. :A
Next, I'd have to work out what plants to grow. That's a bit of time looking at flowering times. I might only want to do June to October, so that would rule out plants flowering early or very late. I'd also have to choose between annuals, biennials and perennials.. the % balance and a timetable. No good wanting Sweet Williams in a few months time etc.;)
Having done all that, I'd also want to look at mainly foliage plants that back up the bouquets....e.g. pittosporum and eucalyptus. I'd need those as well. The woman in Texas was all "wham, bam, any old colour, man" but in the UK we are more refined!!!:rotfl:
Whoops! Writing too much...anything's better than going out to fill another Hippo Bag with plasterboard though.:shhh:
Anyway, treat this year as a bit of learning and time to test the market to see what people like. Car boots, garden gate or whatever.0 -
I was going to try a few of a lot of things lol, and see what got on well, and then stick to what liked our garden..
I get your point about them only being advertised/promoted by the sellers..
I love those alstroemerias.. why have you got your shades on Davesnave.. is there something I should know about them before I do more than google the picture lol
EDIT... just seen your other post..Davesnave.. yep this year was going to be seeing what flowers would like our place, go around a few dif farmers markets in the summer and see who is selling what plant/flower wise, and what type of prices they are charging...
I also want to find out about petel confetti.. and what sort of petals they use, and how much they charge etc.. it will never be big scale, and prob just a few bunches/posies a week... to sell along side the other product, that we would never sell enough of, if it was a stand alone product by itself in a farmers market..
Its ALL trial and error.. I absolutely love sweet peas.. and if could have a garden full of them I would lol.. but they only have a few days once cut before they start going over..Work to live= not live to work0
