Welcome and congrats of getting the piccies into your post; I have not mastered that yet.

My first thoughts are that you might want to ID the trees and bushes in the lawn. Some of them could be fruit???

    I've been Money Tipped!
Gosh its so neat! ( looking out of window and blushing)

    Welcome!

Well, I was only a couple of years older than you when we bought here, and while I had some experience fir ( DH) had none.

Plants are pretty forgiving. I miss Rhiwfields calm words with the fruit trees but my feeling is that when I make a mistake most of the time nature will sort t out. And a quick read about what I'm not confident on, but better still, asking people with experience .....davesnave, RAS, any of the others , often makes me feel enthused enough to have a bash.

Its gardening, NOT brain surgery. :). And what a super canvas you have to start from!
  • Thank you.

Rummer and Ras: I would love fruit trees, I suppose once i get in, I can have a closer look at them.

lostinrates: It probably won't stay that neat when I get my hands on it. :-) My Mom is quite a keen gardener, i'm hoping she'll give me a few beginner tips to get started.

I wondered about planting a bit more beech hedging and putting in one of those spy cams CTC, but it would be likely to capture every bus and tractor going past rather than Mr Dog in the act. :(

Besides, I can keep planting prickly things, which is much cheaper! :D

For the future however I have my eye on one of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MINIRIG-Portable-rechargeable-speaker-GREEN/dp/B00EAXFE9U/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_i

Connected to a MP3 player, it could easily give Mr Dog a dose of his own medicine ( I already have the recordings.)

But I rather fancy something like this, lower volume, but always there, like Chinese water torture:

    http://www.armadamusic.com/news/2013/03/50-best-trance-hits-ever-vol-2/

I'd like a Minirig anyway, but first need to construct a totally bomb-proof metal enclosure near the boundary....It'll be a while, but it makes present annoyances easier to bear! :rotfl:

Reminds me of a time at uni; we had one vicar's son who had a small harem round which he would rotate over the course of a couple of evenings.

One of whom was very noisy, which put people off cooking and eating their supper. He was a bit of an exhibitionist so asking nicely did not work.

Until one of the brighter sparks realised that their window was open. Mic dropped round the corner from the adjecent room and fed through the amp next door. Slight delay, full volume, right across the lake. With that accent there was no doubt as to the owner.

They wound things up very quickly and were quiet as mice thereafter. :D

Hello, I thought I'd join you all. I am almost (completion should be within the next 2-3 weeks) the brand new owner of a bungalow with huge garden. I'm 28 and have never spent a day gardening in my whole life. So this is a new adventure like nothing i've ever done before.

Hello TG, welcome to the madhouse! ;) You will be garden hooked before you know it! :rotfl:
It is my dream to have a flourishing veg patch and a pot bellied pig. I think the pig may well stay just a dream but the veg patch I can definitely work on.

I think you're probably wise to forego the pig, but CTC is the person to ask about pigs. Looking at your garden I suspect it's a little on the small size to have both a veggie garden AND a pig. :( And don't believe that stuff about miniature pigs - seen too much on the tele about how big they actually get!
The large garden including greenhouse and shed is a big part of me wanting to buy this house in particular. It's mostly grass at the moment but i'd like more flowers and raised beds for my vegetables. Unfortunately its been absolutely chucking it down both times i've viewed it so I haven't been up to the top of the garden to see what's up there besides the greenhouse. It's all being left anyway.

Oh how I envy you your greenhouse! We've had a couple of blowaways, first one did quite well for about a year, the second we had a gale with a VERY strong squall come up between the houses, and it just ripped it to shreds. Before I'd even had a chance to use it! :( We're currently trying to sell our old home, and we've got a couple of wardrobes there that we intend to take to pieces to make raised beds at our lottie. They're solid wood (not that laminated chipboard) and I'm hoping they'll last a few years.

Take lots of photos the first year so you can remember what there is growing where. And don't rip out or replant until you've had a year to see what's there - could have bulbs that won't be showing yet, or other spring flowers. Check for tree preservation orders on the trees too. Just in case!
I'm also gaining a 3yr old King Charles Cavalier called Hollie, the current owner is moving to sheltered accomodation where pets aren't allowed so she asked me if i'd take the dog with the house. One look at her and I couldn't refuse. I'm just itching to get in there asap now.

Aww, new house and new dog too! How sad for current owner that she can't take her pet with her - I really don't see why they have to have rules like that. Of course if she isn't able to walk the dog and look after her/him/it that would be different. Must be very hard to have to leave home and garden and then also lose loved pet.

Can't wait for you to move in and share photos!

Just for fun, here's what our garden looked like when we got the keys to the house.

When we moved here we did not touch the beds for a year so that we could see what was already planted. We did set up raised beds on areas of grass but left the rest of the garden to see what would happen. I would strongly advise doing the same as we found some real gems and really got to know the light, water levels and various other wee quirks of the garden which has allowed us to plant more appropriately.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

I hope so, i'm stuck with it if not! :rotfl:

Yes, I think you're right. I think a pig is a bit ambitious. I went horse riding when I was very young and there was a pig on the yard called Basil. I just loved him so much, i've wanted a pig ever since. If I ever win the lottery, i'm buying a farm full of animals to keep as pets. :D

That's awful about your greenhouses, hopefully you'll have better luck in the future. I think the wardrobes sound like a great idea. My mom said something about railway sleepers but they seem quite expensive.

I never thought about taking pictures, the ones I have are just from the estate agents. I shall take loads when I move in. I agree with you about waiting to see what's there, although I don't suppose there's much to do over winter. I'm planning to build some raised beds over the grass and see what else comes up in the spring/summer.

I know, it is very sad. She's such a wonderful dog, I went to meet her again last saturday and she was so fussy, just wanting constant cuddles and attention. I think i'm going to adore having her. I did say the owner could come round for a visit anytime, if she wished to.

Can't wait for you to move in and share photos!

I love your garden, it has character. Have you done a lot to it?

Thanks Maggie, I look forward to sharing my progress. :)
  • That's exactly what i'm planning Rummer, setting up some raised beds and hanging baskets, then letting everything else grow of it's own accord for a year. At least i'll know what i'm dealing with then.
