All 'first footing' cancelled here due to torrential rain, the steak pie is the fridge for tomorrow.
Bay trees bundled up against the wind/rain as much as the cold.0 -
Weather here is just dull, windy and rather too warm for January.
I'm still breaking the reconstituted granite slab which was the front porch!:(:o:mad: Another 3 hours will see it wrecked, I think, but not today: my back won't take any more. I shall go and throw breeze blocks into Pete's trailer now for light relief!
I just mentioned to DW that the trailer looks quite smart for a rubble mover, and she's just told me that's because it's used to transport the Fayre Queen every July!
Hmm, might need a bit of a scrub when we've finished.:rotfl:0 -
Happy New Year all, and congrats to grandpa Dave!
Well I was going to have a quiet night last night but it went out the window, stayed out til 3 and I'm still feeling hung over! I did the animals at about 8.30-9 but felt worse as the morning went on so I retired to bed with a cuppa and have not been up long!
I did need the sleep, I've been up the past few nights with my old dog, he's got laryngitis and the antibiotics the vet gave are taking time to work. Tomorrow I will ask them about something for the cough itself, it keeps us both awake, I've been giving him honey and some websites say certain human cough medicine can be give to dogs but Speak to the vet first.
Yes, dogs and smells! I really need to clean up in the dogs room again, the dust that comes off them is ridiculous. My friends whose party I was at last night have two great danes, one is an absolute giant, but they are really low energy dogs and don't need loads of walks etc, just lots of room! Only mention it as some of the smaller dogs can be very high energy, maybe don't discout the wolf hound!
It's blowing a gale out, not much rain, I'll go and check everything's where it should be in a minute and not blown away!0 -
Oh Dave, many congrats about being about to join the throngs of doting grandparents!
:rotfl:
I just want to recommend one of a series of books (all great BTW, but difficult to put links to all) that might be good to start off the book habit: Baby Sees Spots and Dots.
Used to run a school bookshop in DDs primary school, so can't resist recommending books for kids! :rotfl:0 -
Happy New Year _party_
Dave that is wonderful news and I am truly delighted for you all (about the baby not the toilet) Rumlet will be a year soon and has brought such joy into all our lives.
Alfie I would love to rehome a rescue puppy however the rescues within sensible travelling distance will not rehome to families with children under the age of 8. We are also out with animal circles so we don't really know anyone who is likely to have a litter and I am reluctant to rehome a dog through Gumtree or other promotional sites.
Ferret Keeper A larger dog would be grand however with the size of our house a small dog would make more sense.
All these dilemas are why we are still dogless as we tie ourselves up in knots trying to make a decision and then give up :rotfl:
Betterdays Hope the water is sorted
The weather here today is foul so I have remained firmly indoors and have no intention of crossing the threshold for a few daysWhen I have a moment I am going to get out the gardening books and start planning THIS years veg patch, only a few months until planting begins :j

Oh what a memory jogger, I used to go first footing with my parents to my grandparents, we walked round just after midnight if I remember rightly...wouldn't catch me doing that in that part of London these days I must admit.
My dads family are originally from your part of the world IHS, Greenock, I only ever went there once when I was very young but remember it being beautiful.
More recently (well 10 years ago ) I was in the Glasgow area again, Helensburgh, where my step kids were living with their mother. Not as picturesque and it was a foul day, so I can imagine the battering your poor plants get in weather like this!
Oddly everything was fine outdoors, that I checked anyway, we built all out shelters and things extra strong to cope with the extremes we seem to get more often. But I don't have anything resembling a nice garden to worry about, not yet...
This is the winter I WILL plant willow in the wet bits and shelter belts and privacy screens elsewhere, I've had enough of people seeing everything we're doing!
Anyone else making new years resolutions?
Edit, Rummer I can't believe you can't rehome a rescue because you have a child, how ridiculous, it's such a pleasure to see kids and pets interacting. But it's good to take your time with such a big decision, and quite right to stay away from gumtree etc, that's not the place to find your puppy.0 -
Awwwww congrats Dave. We need to know what flavour you get.

Thank you maggie, I'm sure we'll get into the grandparent role eventually, but it's working out what that should be which is hard.
I know when we had our two, we wanted the grandparents to take a step back after quite a short time, which they did, but our daughter thinks differently at present and wants Mum on hand for the first few weeks. That may change though. Like us, the happy new parents may soon be saying, "We can do this!"
Either way, I guess I'll be oscillating up and down the M5
for a while. :undecided
Board books are great and those look good value.0 -

No resolutions, but I'm probably going to make a privacy screen too.
Despite 'losing' the larger rubble we're creating, so we no longer need to build another hard-based track, we'll make new paths near the house by digging out top soil and filling.
I'm now thinking of making a low bank with the soil, 3m from the elm hedge shielding us from the private road to the barn conversions. The elm is fine in summer, but in winter there are large holes through which much of the garden can be viewed. A second hedge would give us year-round cover and the gap between the two would be a bit like an old 'hollow way.'
I also want to extend our orchard / willow grove, taking it right down to Mr Dog's end with a variety of trees in two lines, like those that are already there. However, as that will mean making new sheep proof tree shelters, I don't think that will happen this spring!0 -
Just browsing Ebay:coffee:and ended-up buying this to add some 'interest' to the border...apologies for lapse in good taste0
