Raised beds shouldn't be more than about 4' wide so that they are easily reached without being stepped upon..

I haven't measured mine. From memory they might be 4' 6".
Thanks Dave and what about the height of them?

Alex, there are always options, might not be the ideal dream ( which what ever the dream is in your head, in reality it doesn't exist, but you can get close to it)

are there alotments close to you?, sell up, and move somewhere within travelling distance with a large garden ( even if it means travelling into work by train?)

OR...... find somewhere in the country to rent? and what ever equity is left in your house after it is sold, can be used to rent and live off for a few years....

A lot of people have sold their houses/flats etc in London, and have bought smallholdings, houses with large gardens etc in wales... and live off the money left from the sale ..

BUT the main question you got to ask yourself, can you maintain this type of lifestyle... only you know where your limits are and what you can potentially achieve
Work to live= not live to work

If you follow the link in my post 1231 you'll be able to see the ones in my polytunnel. These were originally 6" high, but I found that a bit shallow for when I added compost/manure, so I doubled it.

Having higher sides is probably a good thing outdoors at this time of year when, if you add compost or manure, birds will fling it about searching for worms & bugs. They have thrown my mulch under the hedges everywhere!

Outdoors I'm building beds across a slight slope using 3" to 4" half round fencing rails for the sides. I'm putting 3 on the downhill side and 2 on the uphill side, allowing the soil surface to stay level..... if that makes sense. Haven't got far with that! :o

Makes perfect sense and my plot is one slope so I will have to do something similar-thanks again

No action today. We had a visitation from the Outlaws, who are very good with input to the building work, so a number of issues were settled, which we'd previously discussed without conclusion. :D

And we had a hearty wave from Mr Dog....well, I think it was a wave!:rotfl: MiL and I were drinking our tea on the patio, surveying the field and sheep, when there was movement at the far end (220 metres away.) It was Mr D, who came purposefully through his bushes and err.. 'waved' at us.

    We didn't wave back. :p
