Just got back from A&E, had a phone call earlier from my mum saying that step father couldn't stand the pain any longer, he had a locum dr out this morning re- pain, didn't even look him over, just prescribe pain killers, even though he is on morphin for his back... so phone Ambulance and went to A&E

Looks as though he might have fractured his hip... so they are going to keep him in and do MRI scan tomorrow ( had an xray tonight), if he has, they will operate tomorrow, and put a steel bar in his hip?? will know more tomorrow..

the hospital he is in, is approx. 30+ miles away..

a lot of the rivers around here are high with all the rain we have had today, plus the canal/ stream running along side the bypass road, had flooded the road... but seems to have cleared now...

How old is step-Dad CTC? Did he have a fall?

Looks like you need to sleep in today for a while!

Happy New Year all! I hope 2015 brings you lots of good surprises and much love and laughter.

We have a drastic decision or two to make this year, so we will have to see how that pans out. It involves letting go of something long-nurtured and cherished, which is just not feasible any more.

Congrats on the impending grandparenthood, Davesnave. I'm in no hurry to join - we haven't even got all our children out of the door yet! Maybe this year...

Keep safe, warm and dry everyone.

Hello everyone, happy new year to you all. Congratulations to Dave and Mrs Dave.
I shall try to lurk a little less his year. Still no further forward is persuading husband of the day dream but we have made some steps towards improving our situation by changing mortgage etc, so little steps but helpful ones. I've just done an order from real seeds for some chillis, a new tomato variety, some coriander and some French beans. I've had most of them before but got lazy and didn't save my seeds-doh! Not very money saving is it.!
I was considering putting raised beds in and now I don't know what to do as my little veg patch is very fertile snd produces well. I think I just need to be more consistent with my hoeing and tending to it. What do you all think-raised beds or keep my veg plot? I'm not sure what to grow this year-French beans and peas for sure, mange tout as well. But I don't think I will do potatoes, I'm definitely not doing peppers-I just don't have great success with them (they grow but take so long to riped they're skin is too tough), not sure I will do carrots either. So maybe just a plot of peas and beans lol.
I might try to get out into the garden this weekend and give the veg patch a little hoe over, it's looking ok. And tidy the potting shed up. I have far too many pots and it needs a good old sort out.

I don't think you join, you're conscripted! :rotfl:

Fay, the main advantage of raised beds for me would be easy access, a clear system for rotation and good weed control through having ground cover sized to the bed. I find they help me stay more disciplined. :o

can I ask what it is??

Davesnave... there are few options on how he did it..a week or so ago, while sitting on his chair ( he had a chair that vibrates to help him back, and one of the legs broke, so it gave way and collapsed... then he said he fell out of bed twice in one night, this was a few days ago... didn't have any pain when these happened, then he hasn't been himself since Tuesday, and then yesterday he had severe pain in his groin... and when the loc Dr cam out to see him, said it was prob his back, and gave him 2 subositires sp? slow release .. the bloody dr didn't given take his blood pressure, examin him, nothing... so by tea time, he just couldn't stick the pain no more.. ( and he knows pain.. with having 2 discs removed. trap nerves etc in his spine) so they phoned nhs direct, and they told them to phone the Ambulance straight away... they xrayed him in A&E, where they thought they could see a fracture, so they are doing an MRI scan this morning/today.. to see what is what..

These would be the main reasons for me moving to raised beds too. What depth are yours if you don't mind me asking? It would make life easier to have them so I could have proper paths between so I wouldn't have to then dig so often purely because I've compacted the ground walking on it!

Raised beds shouldn't be more than about 4' wide so that they are easily reached without being stepped upon..

I haven't measured mine. From memory they might be 4' 6".

It's probably not all that unexpected, but we are pretty much decided now that we cannot pursue our wish for a smallholding. There are a number of reasons but the biggest ones are health and money. We would have to relocate to afford one, which would mean no income immediately. DH won't be able to run it by himself so that means I would only be able to work part-time. I've calculated our monthly expenditure and a part-time job won't cover it.

It's been the dream of the past 22 years, and it's time to let it go. It's hard, but it's for the best.

Does anyone know / know of somebody who wants a Lavender Sabelpoot c0ckerel? He's a smart looking little bird, not quite five months old but he's already crowing and is very red in comb and wattles so we reckon he's mature.
