The £1,000 emergency fund challenge.

Every little helps mossy. Even the odd £20.
Managed to add a small amount to my EF yesterday, but not as much as I had hoped to.
Washing machines swapped over, but in the process I managed to snap off the lower part of the sink waste outlet, so another run to Screwfix and another £14 spent out. But At least I didn't have to call a plumber.
I reckon the £70 I spent on the basic plumbing course has more than repaid itself in money I have saved by doing plumbing repairs myself.Never Knowingly Understood.

Hey all,
#198
Only 6 days left until I can stash some cash away in EF...going to push hard with NSDs in last furlong and get my penny jars totalled up and cashed at bank this week too. Refuse to use coin star...
Only managed to get 0.99p for one of DD jackets this week (£18 worn once!) will transfer that to pot Friday too.
Hope everyone else is going good too.

Hi carbootcrazy,
Well done on your carbootcrazy sales...I put a post out on my thread 'penny by penny...brick by brick' asking if anyone had any tips about upcycling/reselling things...
Have you ever given that a go - selling on anything you've seen as a bargain at carboots etc.
Be interested to know what you think.
PennyJar
Sorry, PennyJar (lovely username by the way:)), I've only just seen your post:o
Will pop over to your thread tonight and have a look:beer:0 -
Well done on getting your washing machine and plumbing problems fixed without much cost , patman:T. I wish OH was as handy and resourceful as you;)
As promised last week I'm back with an update. I'm over the moon to say that at long last, after all the panic and crises of the past few months I've now hit the magic £1000 in my EF again:j:j:j
I did 2 car boot sales at the weekend (slowly getting to the bottom of decades of hoarded 'junk') and made a personal total of £151.20. I sold quite a lot more stuff but it belonged to OH (he wouldn't be seen dead selling at a car boot sale:eek:) and I had to hand his profit over to him:(.
I made a bit more through cashing out money from surveys and a book I sold on Amazon. All told it would take me just over £1000 but I'm keeping a bit back to treat myself. That's a very rare event:o. I'm not talking splashing loadsa money, just a modest £15:j
I'm planning to leave my EF exactly at £1000 until the next emergency crops up. When I spend some I'll make replacing it my priority as it's such a comfort knowing I've got a safety blanket. Thanks again, patman, for starting the thread:beer:
I'm going to concentrate my savings efforts now to build up £3000 in Helen's thread as it's destined for my 'new to me' car fund. My old faithful is 14 years old now and although it's just passed its MOT with nothing recommended for attention in the near future, it's not going to last forever. Must get myself prepared for when the worst happens;)
I won't be deserting you all and hope to be popping in from time to time to see how you're all doing. Let's hope I won't be back any time soon to report an emergency:)
Good Luck, everyone:beer:0 -
Washer dryer has died!! DH had a look to see if it was something obviously and easily fixable...but doesn't look like it.
We've been looking at replacements this evening, but we spent ALL day stripping wood chip from DD's bedroom walls so bit too tired to think straight!
For some reason this month is turning out to be killer expensive!! :eek:At least I have my emergency fund to fall back on.

We did start looking at new washing machines and even found out that my local Euronics store was cheaper on like-for-like machines than either Currys or Hughes.
Anyway, we ended-up with my mum's machine. Even though it is newer and has had less use, it is very much louder in use than our old one.Never Knowingly Understood.

Just bought a new washing machine not a combined one this time (will have to get a cheap dryer before the winter).
To be honest we've had our machine for a very long time and I knew it could go at any minute. I had been hankering after a new one for a while but refused to get one until ours died. Managed to get it for £80 cheaper than AO so my EF has taken slightly less of a hit than expected which is good. I do have to wait until next Thursday for it to be delivered but for an £80 saving I can cope with that!!

Well done on the great savings there, mossy:T.
I hung on to my old machine longer than I should, kept having this and that repaired until it eventually completely died:(. I'm so glad that it did (apart from the panic about how I was going to pay for a new one:o). The new one washes so much cleaner, is cold-fill only which means I don't have to use all my hot water on washing day, has a bigger variety of programmes, rinses much more thoroughly and has a choice of 7 spin speeds, is so much quieter in use and has a bigger drum and door opening. I wish I'd bitten the bullet a couple of years ago and saved money by not resuscitating the old one;)
Happy washing:beer:0 -
Thanks carbootcrazy! Felt a bit sick changing my siggy though.
Still that is what an emergency fund is for I guess!!
October to March is the time of year were we tend to have a bit more each month than we need because of DH's work so I will try and give the EF a boost (along with paying and saving for everything else under the sun!!).Saving for Disney again, oops why book one Disney holiday when you can book two!:starmod: Emergency Fund Savings - #148 - £10/£1000 1% :starmod::xmastree:#083 SPC6 £63 - SPC7 £90 - SPC8 £63 - SPC9 £54 - SPC10 £26 - SPC12 £70 :xmastree:0 -
Carbootcrazy - congrats on reaching £1k!
Mine is down to £80.04 after some expensive vets bills. He was worth every penny though, I don't begrudge it.0
