  • Last night the hard drive on my macbook suddenly just went kaput since it's a hardware issue and not software it's not something I can fix. My dad's handy with computers so I've bought a new hard drive and sent both it and my precious macbook back 'home' to Hampshire for repair.

Had to take £150 out of my emergency savings to do so, but it's a far cheaper method than the genius bar who couldn't even see me until Tuesday anyway.

So now my EF is at a lowly £850 - so soon after my good news! Ever feel like you can't just "have" a good thing? Like something awful has to happen in quick succession. Ugh.

Welcome 5erge. You are #156. Have you read the entire thread?. If so, well done.

Bad luck Lexbubbles. Did you have a full backup of your HD?.

Well, college has finished for Xmas so no plumbing next week.

  • I did not, but I don't bother with that as all my files are stored online in various places and I have nothing I will hugely miss. Just got to download/re-install programs really.

    Thanks Patman.

I have setup a Lloyds money manager plan for my emergency fund, these are a great way of keeping track of any savings goals you set as they advise you when you need to add more money if you steer off the track!

While there is no time limit I set myself a temporary date of Jan 2017, meaning savings of £74.57 required each month. To be honest I'm only going to save what spare change I have, ebay sales, boot sales, Topcashback etc... but having a plan always helps.

    Thanks

Maybe a ssd would have been less expensive and fast -excellent addition to any mac -very simples to replace a hdd.

The drive was only £55 though? (so not actually expensive in the slightest). I know it's simple but I don't want to do it myself - I have arthritis and my hands lock / shake / generally don't work well enough for me to be even remotely willing to do that lest I break something else. I doubt I'd even be able to remove the teeny tiny screws at this point.

Hence why I sent said drive to Hampshire. To someone I know has the skills to take it apart without damaging it and whom I trust andp don't have to pay. Return postage was almost £60 and thus more than the parts. But STILL, as I said, cheaper than taking it to apple. Probably still cheaper than the dodgy 'wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them' unofficial repair centres as well.
