Why do you get so defensive about the M3? It's a competent car, doesn't define you, and isn't desired by a lot of people.

I am defensive about the M3 because I own one and I have put in my hard earned cash to purchase it and to maintain it.

The M3 is certainly desired by a lot of people...I don't know where you come up with your assumptions. The E92 M3 is a masterpiece, especially its engine.

Ah. You're trying to justify spending so much on a car. Here's the thing; you don't need to justify it. You like it and that's enough. I wouldn't buy one but I'm twice your age.
  • Why has this !!!!!!!! started again?
I fancy an M3, but it's just not worth the running costs. Would prefer the 330d, remapped would be as quick, or quicker 90% of the time; and the power would always be there, effortlessly.
Brother has a rwemapped E46 330d, and a 335i (E93?), and I much much much prefer the diesel, having to wait for the power in the petrol whereas it's always there in great lumps in the diesel.

The E46 M3 is a fantastic car, but please shut up about the fucking thing, it's not everyones cup of tea.

Remember Jason Plato and the photo with the custard?
You, your M3, and a tub of custard, or you don't own one... :)

    Let me guess... 28?

Do you have a citation for the M3 being fundamentally different to the 3 series? Everything I've found points to it being based on a 3 series; common chassis, common parts, new engine. It's just a 3 series performance model like the amg, st, vxr, type R etc.

There's a bit more to it than that, M do have quite a bit of involvement to be fair.
Upgraded interior (better seats, better headliner, better dash).
Upgraded exterior (better front bumper, better rear bumper, wider wings, better mirrors).
Transmission, suspension, engine, exhaust; just about everything is different.
They use higher quality lighter parts, they have tighter tolerances and they change a lot of parts that would not be able to handle the additional power from an M engine.
Many parts altered either for performance reasons or to deal with the higher power and tighter tolerances.
    It's not a 330 with a few more horses.

There's never been a bad M3 or M5, and they're usually the car in class to try and beat :)
Their only downside is some of their owners.

chassis: A general term that refers to all of the mechanical parts of a car attached to a structural frame. In cars with unitized construction, the chassis comprises everything but the body of the car.

I don't consider the body the chassis...

under this definition EVERYTHING is different.

    engine
    springs, shocks
    hubs
    differential
    transmission
    mounting brackets
    front & rear control arms
    tie rod ends
    the steering rack
    brakes
    wheels

even the body is gusseted & welded for more strength/rigidity
