    Try OfficeProdKeyViewer

They either purchased Office or they did not. So they should have the key.

This is the message I got:-

    "An Error Has Occurred

    File not found.
Please search with knowledge base with the following error number 20."

Let me get on with my own work? :o

I honestly can't advise you, as I have no idea as to what was on the machine before this all began.

The fact that the owner is not around to advise you on this is unhelpful. That they don't have the key for Office, further so. That they didn't have a backup of their data, even more so.

You can run a Refresh and then run all of the updates until 8.1 Update 1.
I don't know what version of Office they had and which documents and data are missing...

    Sorry!! :o:o:o:o

I wish I could get on with my own work too. :o

The owner has surfaced in the last few minutes. They received this as a present and they cannot remember what they received with it and they are not at home to look either.

I will attempt to run a refresh and then updates if possible.

Thank you for all your help, it really is appreciated!

The owner is getting their laptop back tonight, nothing I can do with it. It didn't recover documents.

Thank you for all your help and I hope you got your own things done.

So what did you recover, if no documents?

What happened when you attempted to refresh/reset? Those actions are not designed to retrieve documents.

I should have said I did not recover any Word documents or pdfs.

The owner has the laptop again but I may see them this weekend if there is anything you think I could do?!?

I hope you got your own work completed, thank you for all your help!

If you couldn't recover any documents with PhotoRec or Recuva, then they probably have already been overwritten.
I don't have any idea as to if anything is wrong with the machine in the first place. Is it working or not?
No one seems to know if they had Office installed in the first place.

    It's all a bit vague.
