Where am I supposed to copy the results of TestDisk to and how do I find out how to correct the problems?
I am going to run TestDisk today again to see if I can get this computer sorted, fingers crossed.
There are two hard disk drives, "Windows8_OS (C:)" and "Lenovo (D:)". Am I supposed to run this on both hard disk drives or just the C drive?0 -
Erm.... I thought that you were just retrieving lost data(to an external drive), before running a Factory Reset.0

I do not know what I am doing!
All I know is that the computer is broke and the owner thinks I will be able to get it fixed. What am I supposed to do because I honestly do not have a clue?0 -
I'm not sure as to what you are trying to do. I thought that you were looking for lost documents.
Then to either Restore your PC to an earlier point in time, Refresh your PC or to Reset the PC0 -

All I know is that it crashed and lost files and programs (Office being the only program that I know of which it lost but it may have lost others, the owner never said). They want the laptop back to where it was before it crashed (with files and Office).
I do not have a clue about any of this - when I downloaded TestDisk it decided to save recovered files to the C drive but it kept coming up with lists and I didn't have the option of saving to an external drive so I do not know what I have done.0 -

When I tried "Restore" the only restore points were one on the 30th September 2014 and a second on the 4th October 2014 - both had "Critical Windows Updates".0 -
The following message appeared on screen,"Failure configuring Windows updates
Reverting changes
Do not turn off your computer.".0 -
You needed to save the files elsewhere, other than the C: drive.
I wouldn't drive yourself mad trying to get it back exactly as it was.
Do they have the Product key for Office?
Wait for it to revert and then perhaps run a Refresh and reinstall Office.
This is the reason why one should create backups.0 -

I will try again and see if I get the opportunity to save the files to the external drive.
I have iMessaged them to find out if they have the product key but they haven't answered yet.
I just want to get this fixed/sorted and returned to them asap.0 -
Use PhotoRec or Recuva for lost files. You won't get Programs back that way.
But programs can be reinstalled.
Use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to retrieve any keys to be found on the system.0
