Use PhotoRec or Recuva for lost files. You won't get Programs back that way.
    But programs can be reinstalled.

Use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to retrieve any keys to be found on the system.

Should I try PhotoRec or Recuva - which one is more basic for me to do it correctly?

The most important thing is that you save the output to an external drive.

    Recuva is the most simple.

You need to narrow down which files you wish to save...or find a bigger external drive.
If just documents, then choose those particular extensions.
Since you don't know exactly what was on the laptop beforehand, how can you hope to restore it exactly as it was?
That is what the System Restore is supposed to do.
Since I do not know exactly what was on the laptop beforehand, I also cannot advise as to what you should save and then re-apply after a Reset or Refresh.

This is why the advice here has been less than exacting.

Purchasing a new external drive seems the best option.

I just hope I get the files needed and Office back on it.

Your advice has been extremely helpful and appreciated as always. Thank you! :T :money: :j

Do they have the Product key for Office?

They have responded this morning and said they do not have the key but then I do not know if that is because they are away for the weekend so they do not have it with them or they just don't have it.

This is the reason why one should create backups.

I must learn/read on these forums how to do a back up because although my own laptop does regular back ups they have never been done to an external drive. Hubbys laptop would also need backed up because it was never backed up externally either.

At the very least important documents a photos. If you make a backup to the same hard drive, even to a different partition and then the hard drive fails, everything is lost.
So you should always have copies elsewhere.
If they had a similar backup or image, that could be restored to the laptop to take it back to that point.
If not, one has to depend on System Restore. Which as you know, can fail.
