I can think of one in particular, who recently told me that "they could not be bothered with all the faff" when I explained how to keep money in the 3% 123 account to maximise interest. YAWN, zzzzz...

    THIS!!

My Dad drives me nuts with this! I don't know how many times I've offered to show him how I make over £100 a year for essentially setting up a couple of standing orders by doing a bit of juggling with my savings yet he just says "oh it's too much faff".

I get the same response from almost everyone I suggest it to yet if I said "hey, do you want a free £100 for 5 minutes' work?" People would be like "ooh! Where and how?!" No wonder the banks have been and continue to rip us off, the average member of the public can't be bothered.

Oh well, more money for those of us who can be bothered!

My outlook is like Micawber's from David Copperfield:

"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen [pounds] nineteen [shillings] and six [pence], result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery."

I used the above quote as part of a presentation on budgeting which I did when I had an interview for a promotion at work.

It obviously impressed the panel as I passed. I love budgeting, but find it harder the more money that I have...but I can't seem to give it up.

  • Caterina you obviously have the ability to live within your means - a skill which takes application and dedication. Glory in it and let the rest go hang. What people are actually envious of is the 'knowledge' to employ this skill which is something that money can't buy.

  • I would like to know about the interest and banks accounts. Might not apply over here, but I might be able to do something similar....

Not sure if it's mentioned on that page but also Halifax do a reward current account where they pay you £5 every month for paying in £1000 and have 2 direct debits set up.

That's £60 a year for paying 2 bills and setting up 2 standing orders, one to put the money in and one to take it out and put it back into an instant access interest-paying account (e.g. Santander 123).

NB: make sure you leave 3 days between the money going in and coming back out to account for delays eg weekends, bank holidays etc. and don't forget to transfer enough extra in to cover the bills. I use my two smallest DDRs, gym and mobile phone, as the rest I earn cash back on with the 123 account.

  • Ahhh this is the story of my life today :(

OH's friends are treating OH so badly due to their jealousy around our situation - I don't know what to say to him really as all of his 'good' friends have just been completely uninterested/rude since we started doing more 'grown up' stuff - not one mention of anyone being happy for us!

Sorry for the mini rant lol I am just stressed with it all and how badly they are treating him and today it's gotten worse!
  • ALICE KATE you have each other love, that is a very firm foundation on which to stand and face the world. If other people don't like how you are or what you have then they are not true friends, a good friend will be glad for you and not envoius or avaricious. Could you perhaps find a club or something that would give you a different set of people to mix with, something that will bring you in touch with people who adhere to OS principles and who will understand and not judge. We find the crowd on the allottments are very diverse in how and who they are but the friendships there are all based on the love of gardening, maybe something like that would give you people in your lives who understand where you're coming from in life?
