To conclude, I have learned that my in-laws are unreliable with timing, so in future, i shall decline their requests to look after DS when I already have other plans later that day.
This seems a sensible compromise as they have a pattern with other family members of not sticking to arrangements.0 -
Personally I would have cancelled the playdate in any event as I would have taken the attitude that it was too much of a potch to pick son up, have a chat with grandparents (as you do) rush over to friends and then rush back to grandparents and then back to school0

I have not fallen out with my inlaws. I get on well with them.
