You are all right about 'car crash tv'. These programmes dont develop over the series. The advice is always the same. It applies to all the 'case study programmes'. On 'you are what you eat' - how about advising somebody who is unhealthy but NOT obese for a change - I ate rubbish for years and couldnt get over 10 stone. On 'property ladder' you would think they just say to people 'will you listen to any advise?' and if they say 'no' then they are on the show. If it were me and I had an experienced property developer visiting me I would have a list of questions!. Even the best money shows dont seem to theme their case studies to inform the viewer of different situations - somebody asked about showing people with real debt problems but perhaps these people wouldnt want to be on tv. Somehow it is socially acceptable to be in what I call 'pointless debt' on credit cards to fuel a luxury lifestyle you cant afford - but to not have enough money is not. I know which one I find more obscene!. These people have designer clothes and alloy wheels that can be sold as a quick fix and make for far less depressing yet frivolous shows than the people who really need help. When the shows are on the BBC in particular, the emphasis should be on public service - that's what we pay them for!

There was something on afternoon tv recently whereby the families needed to raise £x for a project around the home and had 4 weeks to raise it in, but the amounts were usually in the region of £2000

A lot of the usual moneysaving tips we cover here came into play, as well as selling off surplus household/personal stuff at car boots etc, but I still can't help thinking how artificial it all was and how many households don't even have a total income of £2000 let alone manage to save that much in a month!!!!

Well the woman on Spendaholics is fat, there's no getting round it (no pun intended) but she carries it well and I think she's quite attractive. Is it un-PC to say that as well? ;)

I'm very interested in the theories on here that they never show anybody in 'serious' debt, just 'pointless' debt - eg wallies who spend £500 on a shirt. Real poverty wouldn't make good tv for most people. When you're watching tv, all you're doing is watching tv - not real life relayed through the tv, just the bits of life that make good viewing!

I'm afraid I'm not one for all the PC stuff and I think "fat" sounds much better than "obese" anyway ;)

And I miss the Gollywog ... and whoever heard of Baa Baa white sheep

Even Andy Pandy got banned for sharing a cot with Looby-Loo!!!! :rotfl:

Real life is boring and mundane and people wouldn't bother watching it if it was too real, which is a great shame as it might spur more people into taking control of the debt spiral many face *sigh*

I agree with the recent posts. Why don't the TV program do a show about real people on a limited income who don't spend hundreds on their car or clothes, to help them to live well and within their means.

I could be called Living Well on Less.

Happysad - how about "Old Style, New Ways" (or similar) - we could all make a guest appearance somewhere along the line to demonstrate the benefits of slow cooking, chicken keeping and vinegar dog rinses :D :j
(But not at the same time, one would hope)
