Free Laptop with AOL now! (merged)

I am already a long term AOL customer and spoke to them today about future deals - spoke to a pleasant lady in India I think - the accent was a little difficult to follow but she introduced the CPW/AOL laptop deal as something I should think about and although she said it was Dell early on, mentioned pre-registering and something about September, I am fairly sure she also said something about a cheque and PCWorld. As I was undecided, and she was counselling me to take time to think about all we discussed and visit the CPW site for more details, I didn't query that last bit that I thought I heard (the cheque and PCWorld).
Any idea what that might have been about anyone?0 -
Personally AOL could be offering me a Porche and I wouldn't go with them... Each to their own fine... but I wouldn't go near AOL (and yes many years ago I was with them)DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -
Know what you mean, as I have seen the best and worst features over the years too, but for a free Porsche I think I'd forgive a lot:-)
Anyone know what this AOL talk of a cheque and PCWorld might have been?0 -

What they're not advertising is that the copyright for the AOL client is going within months, and they're not renewing it, which is why the contract is so long.
Don't see this affecting anything to be honest, Anybody with any ISP can already go to the AOL website and get a screenname and AOL Email address for free. It changed this way shortly before the takeover by CPW of the UK access business. If you have a screenname you can use the client I do believe whether or not you are a paying customer.
Assuming the information above is true then that could be good news as people already whinge about the AOL client so the fact that it will now be completely optional should suit them.
I renewed my contract with AOL on monday anyway 18 months @ £9.99 for 8MB service. This is better for me as the laptop deal is 24 months @ £19.99 meaning its £240 extra over the minimum term for the laptop deal than I will be paying and an additional 6 months being tied in!.
The Dell Inspiron 1501 I bought 2 months ago for £280 is a better spec than the one being given away with this deal so I am more than happy with with my way of doing things.0 -

Bargains83, how did you get that renewal deal with AOL, did you have to take their phone call package aswell?
I called them up to try and get a better deal with an upgrade to 8mb, but they would only offer 8mb if i took the phone call package with the broadband. :rolleyes:0 -

I didn't take the call package but it is supposed to be compulsary with the £9.99 deal so had to argue a little. Basically I live with my parents, they pay for the phone line but can't use the internet to save their life. So I want to pay for the internet seperately because its only me using it. It wouldn't be practical for me to have their phone calls in with my AOL account and I explained this to them and they let me have the 8MB for £9.99 without the call package.
I have been with AOL for 6 years already as well so that could also have carried weight to my argument.
Either way, the £9.99 deal is also only available if you are at an LLU exchange where AOL have installed their equipment you can check this at www.samknows.com
You will also have to be out of contract with them, if you are still in minimum term you have no chance of the £9.99 offer.
Its always worth contacting AOL and haggling a bit, I know of people who are out of contract and are still paying £19.99 a month for the 1Mb service. I don't think I have ever known AOL reduce a subscription off their own back.0 -
