I have now found that you can download free 'Media Streamer' software which allows me to play any off my music, movies, pic's, podcasts etc that I have on my PC.
I can now play all my music etc in any room in my house or in the garden and if you connect it into speakers or an amp you can then get better quality sound. All done using my Wifi in my house.
Where did you get the media streamer software from? Can you post a link to the application?
I installed some media player as it was pulled down using the "application manager" tool, this was a media player developed by Nokia for the N770.
I ran it but did not know how to point it to my media files. I have Windows PCs with shares, and samba on some Linux boxes on my network that is part of the WLAN that the N770 is on.
I've also installed aircrack-ng only to find I needed Xterm done that but now I need wireless utils and then need to get root access to the N770 at the command prompt I seem to be logged in as "user", but this needs an SSH install: BearDrop?
Any advice welcome!
I noticed a company selling N770 with wifi tools pre-installed for $3,600Seth.0 -
has anyone got the problem switching the unit on ? my unit arrived today i cant figure out why it doesnt switch on instantly when i press the on / off button. once on its fine but the moment you switch it off and then need to switch it back on again , you need to press the button quite a few times to get it back on
found this on google, http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/rss/message?board.id=accessories&message.id=10770 -

The software you need on the 770 is called 'Media Streamer' and I downloaded it straight onto the N770 via the 'Tableteer' link which came in the browser bookmarks. Once on the Tableteer site you need to select the 'Enhance' tab on the left then the 'Media Streamer' on the right. This will give you the software you need on the N770.
Once this is done you need to go to the following link on your PC http://www.simplecenter.com/nokia/
and install the software on your PC, once this is done you then open the Media Streamer on your N770 and you can see all the Music vid's etc on your PC as long as it is on.
I hope this helps. They have the internet on computers now!!!0 -

I don`t think its supposed to come on with just one press on the button. On mine you need to hold the button in for several seconds then it comes on, all pretty normal i think. Safety feature i would say. Turning off is just one press and the menu appears so i take it that all is working fine. Everyone else`s like this??0 -
yes - my on off is like that.0

And if you hold the power button for about three seconds when the unit is on and then release then it turns off without going through the menu.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

I ordered a 770 from play, took one day to arrive... crackin'! Now, first impressions...
I really like it! It's a little slow, you can feel the CPU churning at times, but that's understandable. The screen is nice, resolution's a little high for the size - though better that way round than the other. Biggest complaint about the screen would be that solid colours don't appear solid, there's a feint texture (from the touch screen I think) on top of them.
Wifi is great. I set the power to low (10mw in advanced settings I think) and it can pick my router up at half signal through a few walls in the garden. No need for full power though I haven't investigated what difference it makes.
I don't have a big DV RS-MMC card yet so haven't tried any of the advanced hacks, though I'd like to know if moving the OS to a card is really worth it. The guides say it speed up the OS but others have reported differently. Be interested in the opinions of people who've tried this.
Had a quick play with FBreader and was disappointed, a couple of ebook formats aren't supported (PDF included, there's a seperate PDF reader of course which is easy to use) and one format I tried only half worked. I need to play with it more but I was hoping to get a lot of use out of the 770 as a book reader.has anyone got the problem switching the unit on ? my unit arrived today i cant figure out why it doesnt switch on instantly
I had a very similar experience when I first powered on the device. I plugged the charger in, then it took a few attempts to power up. I let it fully charge then it wouldn't turn on until I plugged the charger back in. From then on it's been perfect. I've never had any problem with the power button in the OS so I don't think there's a mechanical fault. I've used it several times without a hitch now so I'm happy0 -
thanks guys, but sometimes i keep the button pressed for 20+ seconds and it doesnt switch itself on.
ive had to 'jump start' it - plug charger in then it starts charging, from there press power button , comes on, then i unplug charger
if i keep at it , even holding it down for 3 seconds at a time, it eventually switches itself on. is there maybe a setting in its control panel that controls this.0 -

You should get a converter. ABC Amber do a few though of them. ABC Lit is available as freeware, converts Microsoft Lit files into loads of other formats including html, PDF and FB2. ABC also do a PDF converter , which is shareware.

Cheers for the tip, I'll have a play thanksthanks guys, but sometimes i keep the button pressed for 20+ seconds and it doesnt switch itself on.
Power button works fine in the OS so it shouldn't be a hardware problem (though it could still be), why not try reseting the unit and reflashing the latest OS? Shouldn't take too long and may help (back up your data first!).0
