Rant about asda

What, suggesting that young people are less experienced than older people is 'discriminatory'? :rotfl:
But that is not the law.
You and a few others here seem to want to force people to do something that the government are quite capable of making legally mandatory and yet haven't.
Oh, do get a grip.
This is probably something that happens once a year in any given shop, if that.
If it was happening all the time then the shops would have done something about it. Even if it was just to say that everyone must have id if they want to buy alcohol. (Which they are perfectly entitled to do.)
However, they choose not to do that as they know it would annoy their customers so you end up with this ridiculous 'lottery' where someone may, suddenly, out of the blue, after happily buying alcohol for many years, be turned down.
Once a year? Wow you must be blinking insane. When I worked in a small co-op this sort of thing would happen at least twice in any given shift!
To be fair, I got fewer arguments after I started clearly explaining the law to anyone getting mouthy-especially after pointing out that if I got it wrong the shop could lose it's licence and they wouldn't be able to buy alchol at all anymore.
Incidently, contrary to your 'older people are more experienced and better at judging ages' argument, it is most often the older cashiers that ID me.Credit card respend 2551.58 (15/02/17)0 -
I'm 55 and have no valid photo ID with my DOB on. Where do you suggest I get one from? My passport expired 4 years ago and I currently have no plans to require another. My driving licence is the old pink paper one that has served me for the 28 years I have lived here and as I have no current plans to move it will do for hopefully many more years. Obviously not allowed a bus pass yet so would like to know what you suggest. Going to asda tomorrow , hope they allow my Carling fix!(other brands are available)0

I'm hoping not to offend you but do you currently pass for under 25? If not, you should have no problems if you do then you're doing pretty great
But if you wanted to pitch a fit about being ID'd then you would have to pay the £20 for an ID if you wanted to get alcohol from that particular place.
I'm sure you'll be fine though :P Even with my over the top approach I think the oldest I ever ID'd was 36 for a lady and 34 for a bloke.0 -

Only to someone with no sense. But looking at the links in post 4 there may come a time when I have to prove my age. Last time I was in asda I used the self service checkout (for the 1st and last time) as I didn't have many items and when the lager went through it was like setting of a metal detector at an airport!
Marliepanda - I don't have any ID with my photo and DOB on. Obviously the 34 and 36 year olds did.:D0 -

Its not worth going through self service with alcohol, even if you do have ID, it is such a faff on haha. I set it off once with Christmas crackers.
I do find it a bit silly you can't use an expired photo ID passport... I mean yes its expired but its not as if you suddenly cease to exist. I'm sure there are reasons for it though!0 -
Can I just point out - in my line of work (FX desk), we need to see ID (at whatever age) when presented with a pyment card - some people know this, some don't. Those who don't know never have a problem coming back with their ID so how is that really any different to purchasing alcohol?
Paper licence? Tough, either get a photocard or come back with a passport.
Most shops should in fact take an out of date passport if there isn't too many changes between your current self and the picture, ie you can't use a passport that expired in the 80s. A couple of years is usually acceptable.
Very few people now hold a paper licence - as if you have sight problems, then you need to have your licence signed off by your GP and this must be done every x amount of years, so I know of 40, 50, 60, 70 even 80yr olds with a new style photo licence.
Theres a reason that the style of licence has canged to a photocard and while it may not be legal requirement to change to it, I can't think of a good idea to not change to it.0 -
Yes but in your job it is required more for ID/card theft protection than anything else. Also this is the reason that no photo ID is required for a cash transaction because there can be no element of ID/card theft involved.Theres a reason that the style of licence has changed to a photocard0

I presume your job is to do with foreign exchange. Are you saying that you need to know a date of birth for everybody on an ID card (sure the females love that)
Why should I change my paper licence? This is MSE of course and there is cost involved. If the government make it mandatory then fine.
What if I don't drive and don't have a passport. Where do I get an ID card from with my date of birth on as I asked some posts ago?(post 83) If the government make ID cards compulsory like other countries, so be it.0 -
I would say to checkout staff, if in any doubt refuse to serve anyone you believe may be under (whatever age they choose >= 18) and if the customer is sober, polite, and claims to be well over the threshold age (and is not clearly trying it on), suggest that they go to customer services and ask to speak to a duty manager.
I'm not sure that would be providing a better customer service though. The two scenarios are:
Scenario 1 (as it is without this referral system) - Customer wants to buy alcohol but operator is not sure they are old enough (and does not want to risk a criminal record) and the customer does not have ID.. the customer leaves slightly miffed.
Scenario 2 (with your suggested referral system) - Customer wants to buy alcohol but operator is not sure they are old enough (and does not want to risk a criminal record) and the customer does not have ID.. customer is miffed but sent to the customer service desk, customer waits 5-10 minutes for the duty manager.. duty manager then arrives and is also not sure they are old enough (and does not want to risk a criminal record) so they also refuse the sale.. customer leaves fuming.0 -
