Yes but in your job it is required more for ID/card theft protection than anything else. Also this is the reason that no photo ID is required for a cash transaction because there can be no element of ID/card theft involved.

Yes, the EU decreed that all driving licences must have the owners photo and signature on it to harmonise the licence information across the EU. I don't what reason you thought it was for but as it is not something that has been mandated that all people hold then it is not an ID card

But the scenario is the same: that the customer must go home and return with ID, the outcome being the same, once ou return with ID, the transaction can go ahead. And the majority of people, when asked to present ID do question why we need it, so its not a well known practice.

Of course it isn't mandated that all peole hold it, because not everyone can drive. The card is the same shape as bank cards, for the purpose of fitting in a card slot. I don't drink and very rarely buy alcohol if my OH wans to get him some on my way home from work, as he will usually get it himself, but I still carry my licence with me, because it fits into my purse.

I presume your job is to do with foreign exchange. Are you saying that you need to know a date of birth for everybody on an ID card (sure the females love that)
Why should I change my paper licence? This is MSE of course and there is cost involved. If the government make it mandatory then fine.
What if I don't drive and don't have a passport. Where do I get an ID card from with my date of birth on as I asked some posts ago?(post 83) If the government make ID cards compulsory like other countries, so be it.

In most cases, yes we do need to see the DOB as a lot of transactions we do, require the customer to be over the age of 18, which we need to determine before the point of sale, and as plenty of people are unaware of the procedure, then not everyone is carryin ID but they have no problem at all going back and getting some.

Ah yes, the same people who are instrumental in the 'No ID, No Sale' campaign. I wonder why?

Oh look, it's like the NUS extra card, run by a commercial enterprise that has a vested interest and gives discounts in shops. And like the NUS extra card it is not legal proof and accepted by all

ID for alcohol: proving your age

Acceptable forms of ID to prove you are over 18 include:
    • a photo driving licence
    • a passport
    • a proof of age card, such as the PASS card from the national Proof of Age Standards Scheme.

BEST KNOWN. No ID card is more widely recognised by retailers than CitizenCard. The card’s PASS hologram (endorsed by the Home Office, Police and Trading Standards) gets you access to what you’re entitled to.

Nobody should be 'having a go' at anyone.

All that needs to happen is that the cashier suggests that you ask CS to get a manager's opinion.

If the manager agrees with the cashier, then, tough, you probably do look a lot younger than you are, and you will need to get Id.

If the manager thinks you are clearly over the requisite age then you get your booze.

This isn't about undermining anyone. It's about using a little bit of common sense to provide a decent service to your customers.

No one should be having ago at anyone, yes I completely agree, but it doesn't always work like that.
In return for refusing to serve someone as they didn't have ID, I have been punched, threatened, and had a glass thrown at me, all by different people. I can not even start to say the words I have been called.
This is actually the prime reason why I am happy to be out of this job, I can deal with drunken people, its people that are ID'd that are the worst in my personal experience.
Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.
  • Very few people now hold a paper licence.

Really? I'm 57 and only have a paper licence. The majority of my friends and acquaintances are in the same position. In fact, I personally don't know many people who do have a photo driving licence!

  • My daughter was upset on her 18th birthday, when she went to buy some wine, that they didn't ask her for ID at Tesco. Some years ago I was asked if I was over 18. The check out operator was reading from the screen. I said nothing. She asked me again. I said nothing. She looked up. I said "I'm 36, and Tesco has been serving me beer, since I made a fake ID aged 15 in 1982, but unfortunately I have no ID on me today. Do you want me to put the beer back on the shelf?" Oh how we laughed.

Maybe your bar should have given some training on how to spot a forged one.
