...... the limit for 'small claims', which is only a few thousand.

It's 10,000 which should be sufficient in this case.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

When you checked your bag in they will have a baggage tag printed off with your flight details, destination and your name. This is assigned to your name irrespective of what details are on the actual bag
When someone does not turn up at the gate they must offload any hold bags assigned to that passenger. Within the system they will check the name and see if there was any bags checked in and find the bag tag numbers. They then will search the hold for those tag numbers to get them off (ignoring any other tags on the bag)

Sorry, I understand the barcode system - I mean surely the time it took for them to search for our luggage they could have just let us on!

That is certainly sufficient, £1000 maximum.

I will try the complaint route first.

If it does end up Small Claims, how much would it cost to put a claim in?

Perhaps a petition should be started because the airport was in the same chaos as 20 years ago...

There was a longer than usual queue at Starbucks this morning as I waited for my early morning coffee fix, then I got stuck in traffic queues on the M1 roadworks, and finally a queue at airport security, all of which resulted in me arriving at the departure gate later than the time stated by the flight operator and I was not able to board my flight.
Who can I claim compensation from? Who in this scenario can I blame and find to be at fault for my failure to be at the correct place by the correct time?
There was a thread on here recently where the OP said something like I’ve been advised to arrive at airport 2 hours before flight departs and there is a bus that will get me there with 2 hours 10 minutes to spare or a very early bus which will give me 3 hours to spare. The OP was intending getting the later bus as they did not want the inconvenience of having to get up very early. The overwhelming response from the experienced travelers on this site was to get out of bed early and get early bus to allow yourself plenty of time. It’s a no brainer.
I fail to understand people who cut times so close then complain. A good example are those who spend thousands on long haul holidays yet seem to begrudge paying the relatively small amount for an airport hotel if flight is an early morning start. A neighbor of mine recently did this getting his family out of bed at 2am to drive over Pennines to Manchester, to park miles away to save another few quid, then only just made the flight and had all the hassle along the way. Was the risk of a puncture, or accident on road, or any one of the other day to day hazards that come along, such as an increased threat level resulting in more security checks as happened this week, really worth the saving a hundred quid or so for an airport hotel.

I don't understand the reference to the Airport Hotel. We had no problem getting to the Airport. We checked in online, had boarding passes and were in the security queue 1hr 50mins before take off. We were reassured 3 times we would make the flight no problem. I would hardly call that 'cutting it' but never the less thanks for your negative and unhelpful input.
  • I know they are working on the security area at EMA, or they were last time I went but the express lane is usually on the left hand side of the barrier that runs from where your passports are checked to the beginning of the zig-zag area
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

@Hello123. I was not aiming my post at you specifically but just making some general comments. My personal view is that they are relevant to the issue, set in a positive and helpful manner and intended to promote at least some thought and comment.
Anyway please let us all know how the petition is coming along....

No 814man, they aren't relevant to this thread. The OP was at security 1hr 50min before the flight. EMA are to blame here.

I have to agree. When we flew to the US last month the check in gate opened 2 hours beforehand. We were at the airport 3 hours before.

WE only got through security on time because people were shouting people to the front of the queue.

To be fair the blame sits far further back than EMA e.g

Kneejerk reaction to 9/11 et al
Pax wanted lowest possible cost for flying
Lack of preparation from pax for security i.e. removing belts/coats/laptops/liquids etc

I yearn for the days in early 2000's when I could arrive at Gatwick with 30mins to spare and still make my Ryanair flight whereas now I'm generally there 2hrs in advance and enjoying a coffee/breakfast before an early morning flight

Good luck to OP in getting any redress from anyone unless EMA own up that there was a specific issue that morning
