Would anyone mind giving me an idea about the approx. syn value of a slow cooker meal I made today? It's gorgeous and I would like to include it when I'm on the plan...

    5 portions:

    850g pork mince (15% fat) - 100g = 5.5 so 47 syns
    2 onions - Free
4 small sweet potatoes, diced - Free
    tin tomatoes - Free
lazy garlic (4 teasp, the sort in a tube with oil - will substitute real garlic when I run out) 1 per tsp = 4 syns
    green beans - Free
red lentils (about half a cupful) - Free
2 tablespoons of olive oil (didn't need this, the pork was quite fatty) - 6 per Tbs = 12 syns
    veg stock cube - Free

Thanks in advance for any help, and apologies if it's not ok to ask this kind of thing on the thread.

I've highlighted the syn value above. As you can see this works out quite high syn (47 + 4 + 12 = 63) so each portion would be about 15, this would be a day's worth of syns.

Can easily be made as a completely Free meal by using less than 5% pork mince (I've only found this recently in Tesc*); use fresh garlic and omit the Olive Oil and use Frylight; everything else is Free.

As you can see you can easily make this syn free on the plan.

    HTH.

Thank you so much JoeDenise! That is much more than I thought.

I bought all the ingredients pre-decision to do SW, of course (the pork mince was £1.97 on YS!) I normally use turkey mince, but I think that is also 15% fat unless you buy the more expensive breast mince. The pork mince is so tasty I'll buy that more often in the lean version if I see YS.

    Welcome
I joined in between xmas and new year last year, I was determined to find a group and start and I did! It was the best thing I did, 49 weeks later and ive lost 6 stone 1lb with a couple more stones to lose. Do it!
    :)

    Great achievement, well done.

I really hope I'm saying the same thing this time next year. What tips would you give to those of us who are just starting?

Isn't it amazing how much difference the fat content makes to a meal, thanks for this Denise, it's useful to know how making simple changes can make a recipe SW friendly.

It isn't easy to find low fat mince here (in Spain), and DH and I were looking at minced beef that was 12% and discussing how much difference it would make. Fortunately we decided against it. We also thought about getting quorn mince, which I think is fat free (?) and combining it in equal amounts, which would make it 6%.

    Have a good week everyone.

    This sounds really nice.

I've never cooked with lentils, do you use dried lentils, and do you put them in straight out of the packet?

Still haven't worked out multiquote so didn't individually comment but thank you to all those who welcomed me with encouragement of how effective the plan can be. I really hope this time next year I can do the same for someone else just starting out (well, starting back anyway!)

I need to keep talking to you wonderful people who have worked so hard and achieved so much. No matter how big we are when we start a weight loss journey, and how little or how much we aim to lose, the hard work is the same and the achievement equally brilliant.

Hi Lois, I use the dried red lentils. I used to bung them in straight from the packet but now I tend to put them in the mixing jug with the stock cube and boiling water, and let them sit for a while before adding them to the slow cooker. Either way works fine, but I like them to dissolve to thicken the stew.

I never used to use them before I came to MSE, but now SC meals aren't the same without them! They are great for bulking out expensive meats, as they take up the flavours beautifully.

Edit: also a great way to get the health benefits of pulses.

I bought the lean pork mince in Tesc* for £1.68 (I think) for 250g. They also had 500g packs on a multibuy of 2 packs for £6.

If you can get less than 8% mince it works out at 0.5 syn per 100g so although a bit fattier than the one I bought far fewer syns.

Quorn mince is Free so would definitely reduce the fat content if minced with minced beef.

What some people do with the higher fat mince is to cook it and then drain off the fat. This won't remove all the fat but would certainly reduce it and thus make it lower syn.
