    Hi NOA
So sorry to hear that you have had a rough time of it of late. Can you get your parents urgently assessed for some additional care, because of your dad's eyesight. Would the CAB be able to offer an opinion, or Age Concern?

Whilst the idea of them moving in with you is admirable, it isn't something that can be done right now either. So perhaps they can get some personal care hours. Also if your mum gets carers allowance (or whatever it is called these days), will she be due to go onto the higher rate even if temporarily. I know that money isn't the be all and end all, but if they can get a bit more, it might pay for the care....

Well done on getting in your tax and VAT. What a weight off your mind. And don't forget what you said about getting next years ready now. Even if you just make sure everything is filed correctly so that it is easy to hand next this December (not I didn't say January:rotfl:), that would still be a good start?

Really hope you can ease your parents fears.

    Hi Chev,
Thanks for your support and practical advice. I am trying to get everything sorted in the office - there's changes to way NI is paid etc and I need to be on top of it all so don't get a shock in bills later on. When I changed bank accounts and cancelled DD for NI payments, HMRC would not renew the DD , so a few months haven't been paid this year.

I have been looking up benefits/ RNIB and have got to call their local contact today. Dad already gets Disability Living allowance and I don't think (reading on .gov site) that he can get attendance but will ask the question anyway. Mum gets carer's allowance, but again will have to ask, because I think registered blind people do get an extra tax allowance but not sure how it works. Its half term next week, so am hooping to make an appointment and be there with them for the appointment. Am just about to buy a talking watch for him., and looking into accessories and gadgets that might help day to day life.

I went to see them last weekend. They are both so sad at the moment. Now they have both gone down with colds, Hope it isn't as bad as some of the bugs going round, and fingers crossed it is not flu, as their jabs might not protect them this year. Was thinking of going to see them again this weekend, but the selfish part of me is saying don't in case you catch it too. So I might go during the week some time - but if its flu and knocks my mum out I might need to go and help them out.

Just feel torn all the time. Spend so much time working and thinking about everything else I feel am losing touch with my son. He doesn't talk much (might just be a teenage thing), gets on with work and then just spends all free time on Pc games online with friends. Family meals seem to have gone to pot, we all three eat at different times4 or 5 days a week.

    Plodding on.

February is such a miserable month I think and when other stuff is going on it makes it even worse, but we are almost half way through now :) Hope things begin to improve for you soon. Thank goodness for snowdrops - a little bit of sparking joy in the gloom and a hint of things to come:)

    HI Igamogam,
Thank you, I am sure they will, just this period of uncertainty and getting back into a routine and them adjusting to the changes. Am sure once practical things are put in place it will get better.
I love snowdrops, they are out in abundance in the garden but have not managed to enjoy them much this year as have been out at work marking papers, mostly unexpectedly as I said I was available at short notice, but it does mean I have been leaving house in the mornings in the dark and returning in the dark. With weekends away have hardly been out in the garden, but today I can see them from office window :). Its very grey and wet so haven't stepped out other than for school run, but they are sparkling in the gloom and it does lift the spirit. Thank you for reminding me about them today :) I may even don my wellie and waterproofs and go and have a potter to see what else is out. Roses need pruning.

  • Well that was easy!
Just phoned Link who have inherited on e of debts, they have been phoning and leaving messages while I have been out at work, and I couldn't face calling them when I got home each evening. Despite what anyone has said since I joined I still have this fear of speaking about the debt:o
All they wanted was to tell me to continue the payments and they updated account that I was working part time and self employed. Review in six months.
One job ticked off mammoth list of things to do. :D

  • Just got update on DH's tax code. Company car tax is going to be £4200 a year.. Have to look at it that old car was costing a lot and we would not have been able to buy another as will be unable to finance a replacement) so tax equates to car loan. Doesn't feel so bad then :D
He will also need pay tax on CB, plus more when the other benefits (health care) kick in.

SC gave me a contact for life assurance quotes - so I am assuming they are good. Need to find time to look at that again to reduce outgoings.

Just dropping in for a bit of moral support NOA. The changes your parents will be going through must be so hard on everyone. But as you say, once everyone is adjusted to the change, things will settle, and you will all know where you are. It's often the new-ness of situations that is most daunting.

Hope they (and you) get the help you need.

Hope your parents feel better soon and manage without your visiting this weekend. You sound really exhausted by it all so I hope you get a bit of respite.

Don't worry about DS, it's a teenage thing and nothing to do with you not having enough time. My DS was exactly the same from 15 to 18, lived like a vampire, only really coming alive at night. He turned out ok and I'm sure your DS will too.

Good way to look at car cost x

Thanks for popping into mine when you are so busy.

    Hi NOA,

Hubby pays tax on a car benefit of £4,200 doesn't he? That sounds just like mine :( !! He doesn't actually pay £4,200 tax each year on it does he? If he does he must be posing in a vintage Rolls Royce or something :rotfl:!!!!

After running my own cars into the ground on long business mileage (brakes / tyres etc etc) the company car is the best thing on the wallet. As long as it's not a vintage Rolls you're quids in :)........it just doesn't feel like it when you look at the taxable amount......really why should you have to pay all that on a vehicle that is only there so you can do your job for your employer? It's not fair but still the best option.

Hope your parents are doing OK - with NOA in charge things will go well.

    Hi mfmaybe,
Thank you so much for dropping by, and your kind words. Change is always hard. I do feel very upset for my dad. He loved beautiful things, especially growing things, and he had a special knack with roses. loss of sight must be the hardest all of the senses to lose.
I tried walking around the house for 5 minutes with my eyes closed last week, thinking about all the things I couldn't see. Heartbreaking.
