thats like nearly $200 a night!!
no thanks, would cost more than most package deals
The cheek  You should have seen where I stayed when a big Pharma Company was picking up the tab, $200 a night wouldn't have got you a space on the floor, although I did snub the $45 dollar breakfast for the $5 fab breakfast from the deli a block away and isnt that part of the charm of NYC, where people on all budgets can have a great time, from $25 a night in Uni digs or upto many thousands of $$$. NYC is a great leveller.0 -
...people on all budgets can have a great time, from $25 a night in Uni digs or upto many thousands of $$$. NYC is a great leveller.
and one person who is paying $25 a night, can prop up a bar, and have a conversation with the guy who is paying $500 a night... No one really cares in NYC about money, which i think is great0 -
Hi
Can anyone tell me a good shop in Manhatten that sells a full range of Levi's cheap? I am looking for something similar to the Levi Store in the premium outlets in Orlando.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks0 -

In Manhattan you'll probably only find full price or sale merchandise in either a Levi's shop or a Department Store, and bear in mind that you still have 8.625% on top of the price you see. (Macy's do offer international travellers 11% off though, so make sure you pick up your discount card!)
You can go to an outlet mall, in New Jersey, with most people recommending Harman Cove, as it is a mall, and also the outlet centre. There are plenty of designer shops there with reduced price clothes, (however no levis). The beauty about NJ, is that there is no Tax on clothes / shoes (so thats where i'm going when i'm in NYC in september!)
I can't seem to find a levi's place anywhere, bear in mind, NYC is HUGE and you can probably find great designer denims, rather than just levi's at low prices. try Century 21. I picked up a pair of Guess Jeans there for about $20, and a pair of Diesel Jeans for $30...0 -
Is there any limits on the amount of clothing you can bring back to the uk, I love vintage Adidas and Stussy gear and i'm intending on travelling light and filling a case with rarities and bargains.. all for my self.
I remember somebody mentioning it's better to take a case of old clothes and dump them when you arrive.. is this neccesary?0 -
Yes, there are limits.. you are limited to... "£145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs." (so thats $290 at current exchange rates)
I've never been stopped and had my case checked, but i'm rarely over this limit nowadays, I normally go to NYC just to walk the streets, and soak up the atmosphere, but i realise a lot of people will go shopping.
Everything you do to bring more back is law breaking, but things like mailing all your receipts to yourself back home, and having no tags on the clothes, means it is hard to tell if they are new, or whether you took them.0 -
Hi all,
I'm desperately trying to arrange a trip to NYC for myself and partner, during the school 6 weeks holidays (so we can leave the kids with family)
The budget is limited and I have checked on Ebookers and Expedia, but I can't find what seems to be a centrally located and resonably priced hotel/flights for less than £1200. I wanted to stay for a minimum of 4 nights really.
Having never been to the US before I though a package city break would be easier but it is likely I'll get the flights and hotel much cheaper if I buy them separately.
Thanks for the advice thus far on this thread... if I ever get to NYC it will be really useful....I'lll also read through the other threads. If you know of any good travel agents or online companies that might have a deal for me then please do let me know.... be much appreciated!
Cheers

what airport are you departing from? i'll go with a generic London search to start with
I"m going to sound like a broken record soon... - hotel - 1 double bed - in tribeca (15 mins away at the most from midtown, but nice and quiet for a good nights sleep) = $700 = £350 hotelconxions.com
that gives me £750 for 2 flights.. hmm... 23rd aug - 27th aug - 4 nights in manhattan, flying from gatwick, landing newark £300.50p each - woohoo
so, £350 + 601 = £951
i know it is late in the holidays, but its the best i can do right now..
flying from manchester makes the flights £734 for the 20 -
I went to New York a while ago now and the best recommendation I have if you are there for a few days is to book a big apple greeter. You fill in a form with what you want to see/do etc and they allocate you a guide for a few hours. You get a travel card for the day plus a bus map that was worth it's weight in gold . If you just want to know how to use the busses or the subway it is well worth the time to use this service. It is free (once only) and you cannot tip but you can now make a donation (That wasn't an option when I went). We had a fantastic guide who took us to Harlem, she knew the best museums and little hide-aways that you just wouldn't have the find on a short trip. She also took us to see/hear some jazz music that wasn't advertised (and in her own time).
enjoy

Hiya. Just back from NYC. Good time to go, s'far as exchange. Rotten time to go s'far as air fare.
Have you tried TravelZoo for the best offers? www.travelzoo.co.uk

good luck! hope you find something. October break is perhaps a better time in terms of price AND has the added benefit of NYC not being so HOT (90 degrees plus last week) and not so crowded.
As for those asking about getting from airports to Manhattan: when you get to the airport, there are USUALLY fliers/leaflets for discounts with CAR SERVICES. Car is usually a Lincoln Continental Towncar with driver for door-to-door service. Be sure to ask for curbside pickup, unless you've heaps of bags/kids/disability, etc. I almost always use a car service (go every year, sometimes 2 x to see family) and it's been the cheapest of the convenient methods.
You might want to look into flying into Newark / Liberty International Airport. Quite often cheaper flight deals than JFK / La Guardia. Newark is only about 15 miles outside of Manhattan, at a guess. Remember though, you have to pay the tolls on top of the car service - which will add about $6 (£3), tip and baggage handling charge (but these are true of taxis, too).
Cheapest of the cheap transport from JFK is the subway - provided no kids and no heavy luggage!
Hope this helps.
:-)
