The last time I visited NYC, the cabbie offered me either the meter or a flat fare of (I think) $45 from Lower Manhattan to JFK. I took the flat fare and he went over Brooklyn Bridge as the sun was setting. See, even the journey to the airport was memorable!

I stay at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in tribeca, and fly to and from laguardia.. I always ask for Brooklyn Bridge to drive over, as I personally think it is the best views around...

i'm going to walk back into manhattan at sunset when i'm there in september to take loads of photos (and i need to find a bar right at the end of the bridge, cos i'll need a pint after that walk!!)

Where would be the best place to buy small electrical items (nintendo ds lite) in downtown new york? I would normally go somewhere like Walmart but there are none in the area

I just came back yesterday from NYC. I bought a DS Lite from J&R Computers at Park Row (near City Hall) for $129. I also bought Brain Training game for $19.99 and a leather slipcase for DS Lite for $19.99. There is a 8.something% sales tax added. I had a $15 discount voucher (think I picked it up in tourist info office) so total cost was $169.21 after tax and discount. It's already showing on my credit card account as £84 sterling. There is also another store called B&H which I hear has good prices but I never went there.

Any budget hotel recommendations? We will only be having a short visit, so fast transport links or a city centre location would be helpful.

Also recommendations of what to see in 2 days. Thanks.

no, it isn't vice versa, from manhattan to JFK it is on the meter so could cost more or less..

Yep this is true, we went again in May this year and to Manhattan is fixed but out to JFK is metered which can be a bit of a stinger if the traffic is bad but then most cab drivers take a detour through Queens suburbs

Cosmopolitan Hotel in tribeca.. you have a subway stop right outside the door, straight to midtown & times square

you have ground zero walking distance away, plenty of places to eat and drink. It is reasonably cheap too (http://www.hotelconxions.com)

Failing that, any hotel in midtown (30th street thru 50th street) is a central location, but be prepared to pay a little bit more

Yeah, I backup those two recommendations.

There is a CircuitCity at Union Square / 14th Street and a couple of CompUSA's around manhattan, but with the discount voucher you can get for J&R, they normally work out cheaper..

Thanks BCL999 and Markymoo they look like great recommendations - I'll see if I can track down some discount vouchers now!
  • Markymoo,
With your experience of the NY taxi thing would it be a bit unreasonable to ask the taxi driver to take in the Brooklyn bridge on our journey from JFK to the Edison Hotel on 228 West 47th Street. I've had a look on GoogleMaps at the difference in distances and it's a little bit more, there's just something about entering Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.
