Thanks all.... if fact my budget is more like £800 but at a stretch £900
Thank you for the price breakdown and especially all the links... certainly the Cosmopolitan and Edison Hotels look like possibles, are reasonably priced and look on the maps to be well located... I'm just going to look at flights now
I live in SE London so as the crow flies City airport is the nearest, then Heathrow (though potentially the hardest/longest journey, by tube across London). Further away but easier to get to (by car) is Gatwick and then Stanstead.
Will post up my findings...
(The other option was to go to Rome.... it may have loads of history but it doesn't have skyscrapers) :rotfl:0 -

Hi again all,
Just to let you know that I have finally booked a trip to New York and am very excited.
In the end we decided to spend over our initial budget but by going through Quidco to book with Ebookers I was able to get nearly £50 cashback.
We are going for five nights (from 24th Aug.), Delta Airlines - Gatwick to JFK and staying at the Novotel Hotel on Times Square (Ebookers quote this as a 4 star, whereas Expedia show it as 3 star). It seems to get very good reviews on Tripadvisor.
The total cost was £1122 (£306.30 x 2 for flights and £509.61 for the hotel) less 11% Quidco cashback (£35.67) for the hotel and 1% Quidco cashback (7.96) for the flights
Very excited now, just need to arrange insurance, currency and get ourselves there!0 -

Thanks
You'll never do all the tourist things.. there are too many... you need to start working out what you definately want to see, and go see them... some of the museums, which as amazing as they are can eat up a whole day of your trip, and if you're only there for less than a week, you'll either end up rushing, and tiring yourself out, or (which this is the better option) you'll prioritise, and come back for more..0 -
Hi,
We are heading to NYC in 3 weeks time (i'm SOOO excited!) but we are flying to Philli on the 23rd, down to tampa 27th (disney land) back upto NYC 29th, stopping just outside NYC at a holiday inn on the wednesday, then the intercontinental on the 30th, then back upto philli on the 31st, returning home on the 2nd Sept.
we are flying with air france for about 370 quid each (oldest child is flying with my klm air miles, £99 in taxes only) and the 2 hotels in NYC are booked with priority club points.
i know we are only in NYC for 2 days, but any suggestions for hidden jems of a bar/food near the intercontinenal (ribs/steak, pasta/pizza) for me, the missus and 17yr old would be most appreciative

One thing i've found with New York Restaurants, is that you'll never really find different types of food at the same place, example, you get either pasta or pizza, not both.. Now, there are chain restaurants (hard rock) that will do, but then you won't find ribs / steak... soo complex really..
I recommend Blue Smoke which is on 27th Street, bet Park and Lex, and it is a great place for some awesome ribs.. they also do steak, fish and some amazing specials, Its well worth checking out....
As for other good restaurants in Manhattan... my advice, is wander away from midtown, down to gramercy, union square, and you'll find plenty of top notch places... :T0 -

Yeah i suppose it will be very hard to do everything so i've got an idea of what i want to do and see. I dont mind coming back exhausted to be honest because i know it will be worth it and it may be a once in a lifetime trip hopefully not and i'll be fortunate enough to go back but i really want to make the most of it whilst im there.
Ive heard a trip to the rockefella centre is better than going to the empire state is that true? I also know to book for the statue of liberty and get there early so we dont have to queue for ages.LBM - April 2007Claimed back my bank charges from Natwest - £1196Halifax Credit Card Claiming £467.35 Rec £467.35!/Capital One Card Claiming - £523.92/Barclaycard Claiming - £403.58 Rec £403.58/MBNA Claiming - £584.37 Rec£584.37Proud to be dealing with my debtsUpdate: 2009 - Currently claiming £1900 from Natwest0 -

The Empire State building is amazing.. i'm personally haven't done the rockefeller center, but if you can, try both, and let us know!0 -
For all those thinking of booking accommodation - consider booking an apartment rather than a hotel. This becomes significantly cheaper than a hotel. My OH and her daughter had a studio flat for 3, 1.5 blocks from Times Square for around £225 per head for 7 nights.
My parents, sisters and aunt shared a 2 bedroom (5 people) and they paid around £215 per head for 6 nights.
This was for November 2006 over Thanksgiving.
Have a look at http://www.urbanliving-ny.com/ and click the "vacation rentals" at the bottom.
I'd have no hesitation in going through them again. The only thing to bear in mind is that the deposit to the agency is non-refundable but check their Ts & Cs and you'll read all about it.
Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!0
