There were plenty of J&R vouchers about. The ones I got from the tourist info (NYC&Co at 871 Seventh Ave) were free gift for a $50 spend, $10 off a $100 spend and $15 off a $150 spend (not combinable). There was also a voucher ($10 off $100 spend) printed on the back of the Gray Lines Hop-off Hop-on sightseeing bus ticket and I think there was another one in a guide book in the hotel room. I was also going to treat myself to a Panasonic TZ3 camera but they were out of stock :-(

    Markymoo,
With your experience of the NY taxi thing would it be a bit unreasonable to ask the taxi driver to take in the Brooklyn bridge on our journey from JFK to the Edison Hotel on 228 West 47th Street. I've had a look on GoogleMaps at the difference in distances and it's a little bit more, there's just something about entering Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.

I've done the journey from JFK to the Edison twice, and both times they go through the queens midtown tunnel. Knowing what NYC Taxi Drivers are like, I would say, this is the type of journey that you could ask for on the way BACK as it is a metered fare, so they will be more than willing to do it.

It may not look far on a map, but driving from the brooklyn bridge to 47th street / broadway, would take about at least 15 minutes, and on a general cab fare be around $10 - 15 by my reckoning...

Personally, when i'm in Manhattan, I'd take the subway through to Brooklyn, and walk back across the bridge, because the views you get are superb, much better walking, than in a car anyway!!!

The Pod Hotel 230 East Street.

That's a cool hotel - I stayed there in February. There's a great diner for breakfast round the corner on 2 Ave, and loads to do within walking distance.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a cab from JFK. You can get the subway direct from Jamaica (where the Airtrain stops) to Lexington Ave (a couple of blocks from the hotel) - $7

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi

I am going to be working at the NY State Fair at the end of August. My boss has left it to the last minute to arrange the travel and hotels!

He seems to think it will be fine for us to fly to JFK and drive to Syracuse it's around 4 hours.

I also need to find an okay hotel. All the obvious ones at the fairground are booked up, I suppose a drive to one each day is no big deal if he is happy to drive 4 hours after a flight. Any suggestions, I am fussy and like clean hotels.

Any advice on the drive, area would be much appreciated.

Hi I am thinking of booking a trip to NY in November and have been doing some reasearch on trip advisor and expedia. Im not really picky when it comes to finding a hotel to stay in as i wont be in it very long i plan to do all the tourist things as it will be my first time in NY.

Anyone have any suggestions? 2 things are a must though it has to be in a central location (so i can find everywhere with ease) and has to be clean. I thought about booking to stay in the Salisbury has anyone stayed here and if so whats it like:confused:

If any of you experienced New Yorkers have any tips/advice regarding NY please post.

I intend to do quite abit of shopping and sightseeing whilst im there so if you can recommend stores for nice clothes and things that are a must do whilst there that would be great.

    Thanks

Can't remember the name, but it will be v easy to find. Turn R out of the hotel and R onto 2 Ave. It's on that block, max 2 minute walk.

There's a great deli on the corner of E 51st and 3rd Ave as well.

Hotel is perfectly clean and comfortable. Friendly front desk, free wi-fi. The room wasn't the biggest, but this is NYC after all! I'd definitely stay there again.

it has to be in a central location ...

    Thanks

central location is such a weird terminology when it comes to manhattan..

I stay at the cosmopolitan hotel normally, which is extremley reasonably priced, and in a quiet neighbourhood, tribeca. It takes me less than 15 minutes, and i'm in the tourist haven of times square and 42nd street..

so being central (i assume you're meaning midtown) isn't really all that it's cracked up to be.

Glad to see you've done research on tripadvisor, its a great website, and by the looks of things the salisbury hotel is a good hotel, (yet a little on the high priced side, compared to what I normally pay)

57th street is bordering at the top end of midtown, so it'll take you a good 10 mins walk to hit times square (times square is 47th street)

the big department stores are great for shopping, Macy's at 34th street, Bloomingdales at 60th street, Saks on 5th avenue.

I'm a stickler for getting people to do the not normal touristy things, wandering the neighbourhoods, that are not midtown basically, as that is where you find the real new york. I don't look in guide books for bar suggestions / restaurants, i just find what i'm near, and it works wonderfully, so I really can't help on the Must See's, though the fish markets at 4.30 / 5am are an amazing experience, and walking back into manhattan across the brooklyn bridge is good fun too..

Hope that gives you a bit more of an insight....

P.S - thanks to the mods for making this sticky
