Hi All,
The new "Amazon" sponsered card has been announced (sort off)...
amazon [dot]co[dot] ie=UTF8&ad=amex_gold_ad_VC&inc=amexgolda13&place=vc&plattr=amex_gold_plattr_VC&pr=amexgold
(not sure if above will work, but if not, just go to amazon, add something to your basket and go to checkout and it'll appear at the top)
The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card which gives:
New Cardmember welcome bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points, when you spend £2,000 on your Card in your first three months, enough for a £100 Gift Certificate to spend next time you shop at Amazon.co.uk.
The Preferred Rewards Gold Card comes with the added peace of mind and service that you expect from American Express. It usually has an annual fee of £125, but with this invitation your first year is fee free.
Plus...- Earn 2 points for every £1 on all your spend made while abroad
- Earn 2 points for every £1 spent on petrol and major supermarket purchases for one year
- Get two complimentary airport VIP lounge passes every year
- Travel and purchase protection included with your Card
- Gain access to some of the hottest tickets and tables in town with American Express Invites
The first year is always free.
I'd personally go for this above the platinum card for the first year. 2 free airline lounge passes, double points on supermarket, petrol and travel spend and a 20,000 point bonus.
Though I'd be more likely to convert the points to Avios than Amazon vouchers, which might skew the perceived benefits?0 -

The fee paying one is probable the best if you go via quidco as you get £20 back as opposed to £5.0 -

You can get £25 if you are referred by an existing customer, plenty of people offering in the MSE referrers forum.0 -
For what its worth:
I am now using the two Barclaycards that replaced the Egg 1% card. I don't know if only people who had the Egg card got them or if everyone can get them and don't have the time to research maybe someone else can. Also I have only been using them for 5 days so can't give a recomendation yet.
The History is complex as follows:
Prior to Oct 2011 I had an Egg Cash Back card. This was taken over by Barclaycard who issued me with a 1% Cash back card (same as Egg). This lasted till March 2014 at which point Barclaycard issued me with two cards. One a Barclays card marked with american express logo cashback card (which I think is 3% cash back) and the other was Barclay's cashback (which I think is 0.5% cash back) The apparent intention being that you carry both and proffer the Amex first and if refused you can then use the other. As I don't like messing about I put the two Barclaycards in my draw and got and used the Amazon 1% vouchers card. Now thats gone, like the rest of us I can't find a card that really suits me so towards the end of last month I got out the two Barclaycards and to my surprise found they work quite well together and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Amex one is accepted in more places than I expected. In fact I have the suspicion that I may end up with more cash back this way.
Oh before someone puts me right I'm working from memory and may have the dates wrong.0 -

If you have the same cards as me replacing the Egg Money Card its was 0.5% cashback on the Visa and 1% on the Amex. I like a lot of pople complained and got double cashback for 6 months (1% Visa/2% Amex) which will run out this month. I would double check your cashback rates if I was you, not heard of anyone getting 3% on the amex. It should show you the rates on your online account.0 -
I think you will find that the Barclays cashback has reduced to 1% on AMEX and 0.5% on VISA. Many ex Egg card holders complained (there is a LONG separate thread on MSE about this) and obtained varying amounts of compensation, and often a doubling of cashback for a six month period. You can check the amount of cashback you are receiving online.0

Yes, Just looked at my account and it is so.
Don't have the time any more so i'm finding it real hard keeping track. I suppose thats what the banks rely on.0 -
