i cannot understand why people are still with BT. they are the most expensive of all the internet and phone providers.

Possibly because of their practice of auto-renewing contracts, not making it easy to find when one's contract is running out, and of course their iniquitous cancellation charges.

Except you'll find that sharing the service between properties is a breach of the t&c's in every telcoms contract-not that enforcement is very likely.
And neighbours are usually averse to sharing all their data, which would frequently result.

With attitude like that, no wonder they couldn't get Communism to work in the UK. Karl Marx is buried in Highgate, rolling over in his grave. Hehehe.
  • With the ever increasing speeds of mobile internet, ever decreasing costs of mobile voice tariffs and texts is it now really worth having a wired phone with BT or anyone?

Our mobile reception is awful. Another mile down the road & it's non existent. So yes, wired phones are pretty much essential in many areas, especially for country bumpkins like us.

Is it? Perhaps not for you. So do it then. No ones forcing you to use their services, and if you don't like the terms just go elsewhere. Plenty of choices out there.

OFCOM banned auto-renewing contracts a while back. There are no longer any auto-renewing BT contracts.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

That is actually a very good idea. The broadband shared between neighbours and splitting the cost.

The trouble is that one person's name would be on the bill. If it's your name on the bill, do you want to accept responsibility for what your neighbour decides to download or upload on your service?

If they do download or upload something seriously illegal, who's door do you think will be knocked in by the police at 6 o'clock in the morning?

If everyone gave up their landlines and switched to mobile broadband, then the networks would grind to a halt-they couldn't possibly cope with the extra traffic, whether voice or data.

I have been now having a VERY serious think about just dumping the landline and wired broadband totally. I live in Shap, Cumbria and am on 3 pay as you go with a decent reception it seems. Speedtest shows 8Mbts on my phone which is faster than my 8MB broadband which is about 5MB.

I have an iPhone and get 300 minutes, unlimited texts and all I can eat data for £15 a month top up. I confess that I find I rarely make phone calls from my landline and generally always use the mobile, I text friends and relatives and use the apps on my iPhone. My landline seems mainly to be there to receive calls from elderly relatives now and then.

The tariff does not allow for tethering but I do tether the iPhone to the iPad and have done this since I got the iPhone 5 and the 3 SIM when I am out. I have also done this with the Macbook. 3 have so far never banned me or sent me nasty messages about it. I don't tend to watch streaming video or download music much or play online games. Mainly emails, web forums and news browsing, amazon orders and ebay.

My total landline and internet liability with BT and my ISP is quite sizeable. Phone bill approx £24.75 and ISP £18.99 pcm. Could be slashed to just £15 a year for internet and phone by dumping BT and my ISP and using 3.

I am in a cooling off period with Post Office and feel a bit chilly so I might call them and cancel the transfer. Take some space and then maybe dump BT.
