National minimum for starters, not sure if it goes up after probationary period or not, I don't think it does, just NMW, but a job is a job, at the moment, I am lucky to find 1 at all in Rotherham, So I am told

I would not mind working in a professional kitchen, always loved cooking, but never went to college to study catering, I would like to be a chef, but I will settle for anything in the catering & hospitality industry (including KFC, lol), I have worked for McDonald's before and I also worked as a kitchen porter at Pontin's holiday camp

Just caught up on this thread. Good luck and I do hope you enjoy it

Don't give up on your dreams of becoming a chef. I've never been to catering college either and I now cook in a pub restaurant All the food is fresh cooked, nothing is pre cooked Yesterday I put out 87 meals on my own. I started just 5 years back helping out one busy night just on the fryer. Now I'm confident prepping and cooking for over two hundred a day. It's not fine dining, it's steaks, all manner of chicken dishes, chilli wraps, fish etc etc normal pub grub.

I love it. Zero hour contract as I said before but there are always hours

    All the best
  • I dont really wanna bike, the restaurant is in Rotherham but I live in Maltby, not really rural but not urban either, this iis the first job offer in 3 years so dont really wanna pass it up due to travel restrictions

BIG respect to you for considering. Many people wouldn't - well done :) I cycle home from work at midnight but only a mile ride home. I personally don't see the problem with 10 miles - roads will be nice and quiet. Just be safe.
  • Thanks Suki & I won't give up on the dream

Today KFC, tomorrow the world, wooohahahaha, lol

I haven't read all posts here but i really would not apply for the job, believe me riding in freezing cold weather is NOT AN OPTION. I have cycled in winter you have to cycle more slowly and carefully. You will end up knackered and if there are any road problems you coThese uld find yourself with a problem or even a puncture. types of contracts really require your own motored transport or good public transport.

I know its a difficult situation but i would recommend training and volunteering, perhaps in citizens advice bureau, it helped me get a job elswehere.

Also try agencies for jobs i dont know your personal situation but if you able to do agency work i would do that. Put your cv on Reed and look on indeed.co.uk, gumtree.

    Good Luck

I found this job on indeed & I am also on reed, CVLibrary, Jobsite & LinkedIn

I will be doing this job regardless, as the cycling is not a permanent solution, only until I have enough money to get my driving licence or CBT sorted

This job is not a permanent fix, I am looking at other jobs, but it has to be a better job to make me want to leave this one, I am not going to turn this job down based on the fact that I have to cycle once in a while, as if I am on days I can get the bus, I will look for other work, but if it's a choice between working somewhere that I have to cycle to & being on benefits, I choose the working situation all the way, I am not someone who wants to be on benefits

Also I do volunteer (at a charity shop) on a Saturday & I will be continuing to do this whilst in work (I have spoken to my manager & he said that its fine), He has also said that he will give me as many hours as I can take, so although its a ZHC I will have enough work to keep me busy

So you see I have the option of work or benefits, I choose work as I am not a scrounger, I want to work unlike some people in this world

Of course it's an option. My father just retired recently, after cycling 25 miles (round trip) every day to work in Newcastle for 44 years.

He was still happily doing it in his sixties, so to claim it's not an options is simply wrong.

Please, don't try to put off the OP with your negativity. Just because you would not be willing to do it, that does not mean that it is not doable.

Tone does not come across well in posts, so, for the avoidance of doubt, this is a not sarcasm...

Well done. You should be genuinely proud of yourself for this. It brings me great pleasure to read of someone determined to do the right thing, even when it's a real struggle.

I wish you the very best of luck.
  • Good luck OP if it really took you 3 solid years to find work, it's probably the idea start you need but I maintain zero hours shall never benefit the person who was used to working 40 odd to find ZHC exists and at the point it is to late which was everything my previous post was about really, just to clear any confusion of doubt.

I still get asked 2 years on why but I can see you'll have a strong reasoning to accept such so won't have the same trouble, clearly
  • OK another update, I am going to be starting at KFC on Sunday (31.08.2014), thanks for the support, TT

Who give a !!!! what hours your on, make no difference to me, ZHC or guaranteed hours, I have a job that's the main thing isn't it

There really is no need to be rude. If I recall correctly you were the one asking if zero hour contracts were ok in you original post.
