  • Maybe an old estimated timescale, from when they started building works
  • On your situation, OP, ZHC doesn't just work against you but for you too. I think you'll find working in a fast food place the hours will be reasonably predictable, even if you find you act as a stopgap for other colleagues (for holidays etc). Be proactive when you're there - ask your supervisor for the timesheets, volunteer for shifts you fancy, give them notice if there are ones you don't want. Make the point that you'll be reasonable and go the extra mile to accomodate them, but you'll expect a bit in return.

In terms of getting there and back - you'll bike for a bit, but see if there are colleagues living nearby and see if you can match shifts as much as possible. Also, check out https://liftshare.com/uk to see if there is anyone you can grab a lift from who is going that way anyway - naturally 9-5 shifts will probably work best for this, but you might get lucky.

With a ZHC - you're under no obligation to take work either http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=4468 . Whilst you'll be wanting to make the best impression early on to ensure you get work and don't show yourself to be a nuisance employee, if you find that attending work is liable to lose you money (wages aren't going to cover transport, for instance) then politely decline with this as the reason. And of course if you find that once you've built up some experience - with a ZHC you can always take the time off you need to attend other job interviews etc. A ZHC exchanges certainty with flexibility, for both parties - that includes you as well as your employer. If they don't like it, they can always offer you a full time position (or fire you).

Best of luck with it anyway.
  • I will be offering to do as many hours as I possibly can, except Saturday daytime as I do my volunteering then, & the manager at KFC has said that he accepts that, and maybe I could do one Saturday daytime per month and the other Saturdays on Nights/Evenings

My attitude to work, as I have said before is that you don't get anywhere without a bit of effort & I apply that to all working situations, voluntary or paid
  • I have spoken to the manager and have made myself available for all shifts, except Saturday days

I was going to got to college, but it seemed a waste of time when I would be offering myself to do more work, thus meaning more money for me in the long run

Again Thanks to all who have been so supportive of me in the time, I will be hanging around the forums to try to help people, with my knowledge

Thanks again, you have helped me so much
  • OK just to let you all know, I have signed the paperwork today so I am now officially an employee of KFC, the manager said he will give me as much work as I can handle, so sounds good so far

I cycled there today, took me 1 hour 30 mins & that was with a ('pit stop' at Tesco, lol), took me longer to get back, more hills and I stopped off at the allotments and spoke to one of the plot holders about getting a plot for myself, so all in all a good day, not too tired either

I should be starting next weekend, just waiting to get my uniform from head office

    Thanks again

    Chris

Congratulations Chris on your great new job, it sounds fantastic, hope it's a job for life, KFC are very successful:)
  • I hope so to Linda_D, manager seems very eager to have me working as soon as possible, even gonna take the paperwork into head office himself, instead of posting it to them, I am so happy to be employed again after so long on JSA, does anyone know if you get any 'back to work' bonus anymore

Me too, let's hope it turns out really good and you're still doing your KFC job in 40 years or whenever you retire :)
