  • I would like to keep you all updated with how my job is going, I will use this thread to keep you updated, instead of starting a new thread

OK, I have now been in the job for 2 weeks & as of tomorrow (Tuesday 16th September) I am going to be trusted with the kitchen on my own (according to manager, most people are not trusted with the kitchen alone, until week 4 or 5), also I have been told that I will be getting at least 35 hours per week from now on (Also manager told me that if I carry on the way I am going I will pass my probationary period with no problem)

Also he would like me to apply to become a Shift Manager once I have been there 6 months (which I would not mind, its like £7 per hour so not bad)

I am enjoying working so much now, thanks for all your help & support

I'm so pleased for you tt1983, have kept you in mind since you started this thread and am glad to see things are going so well. You're such a positive example to others, just goes to show what results hard work can bring.
  • Thanks, it is my belief that you get nothing unless you put something in, I have high expectations of myself, but I have no issues with working an entry level job to get where I am going, maybe this job is just a stepping stone to my future career in catering
  • Hey Topaz the new Tesco store now has positions online might be worth applying anyway! They have all sorts of positions available, go here http://jobsearch.tesco-careers.com/jobs/search and put in S65 in the location
  • Thanks GalaxyStar, I shall be applying for some jobs tonight

Zero hours is good for flexability if you do not need a set income (for example a second job, if you have £ or pension/other income). It can be difficult when you need a certain amount of money each month as you are not guarenteed any work. Personally, I wouldnt want to walk/cycle on my own at that time of night. You could maybe ask if there is anyone who drives going the same way and you could half the petrol, might be tricky without set shifts.

I think you misunderstand what an employer means by a zero hour contract

They want YOU to be flexible, try turning down a shift and surprise surprise you get 0 hours for the foreseeable..you make it sounds like a two way street,it's not, they want you to wait in the house for when they need you, not take a 2nd job to pay the bills for when they don't need you. When they ring you come running or they stop ringing.

I'm sure it depends on the employer. I have a zero hour contract as my second employment and they are very much a 2 way street. If I started turning down shifts all the time they might be different but I tell them when im working with my main employer/have plans and give them times I can work. Now and again my shift is cancelled at last min however, within reason, if something comes up I can cancel my work.

I am really pleased for the OP, congratulations! So glad it's working out!
  • Thanks

The good thing at the moment is that I am the only Full-Time cook, so I am in a very good position currrently, also all the employees are on ZHC's except Managers & everyone does at least 5 days a week (roughly 35 hours a week), so the fact that it is ZHC is really irrelevant in this case, as I don't know 1 employee who has had a 0 hours week, so really its just a way for the company to find a loophole if the custom goes tits up really, but the hours are there if I want them (which I do)

I have asked about doing 6 days a week (instead of 5, which would bump my hours up to at least 40 per week) & the manager said he wants to give me a few more weeks to settle in then he will give me 6 days a week, if i want it

The manager seem really happy with my progress in the short amount of time I have been there (3 weeks) & seems to want me to do all the hours I can
