I suspect that when or if the slip is produced by the bank it'll have "customer known to staff - no sig requested" written on it.

I went to my branch to withdraw some money last week and was asked for no ID they simply handed the money over no questions asked. So obviously I made a complaint and they said in the letter I received today that I had signed an acknowledgement slip when I withdrew the money but I distinctly remember not signing anything. The letter said that because my signature matched their records that they were confident the correct producedure had been followed. I strongly suspect that they have panicked and faked my signature. I have demanded to see a copy of this signature. It is worrying that your own bank can do this to you. Has this happened to any of you?

I had exactly the same experience at the Halifax. Worse still the Manager backed up his cashier's lie. A complaint to the Regional Manager resulted in the sacking of the Manager.

Quite possible if the op has complained about something every time she goes in, they'd remember who she is!

Where did this happen? What was the reason for the sacking?

Well, it was a bit confusing. In your scenario you say there wasn't time for the bank to forge the signature, which implies that signature forging is something that might/would/could have happened if there was more time.

In the context of the OP's story, where there was time to forge the signature, one could be forgiven for thinking that you believe forgery happened in this case.
The thieves are the ones who most likely forged the signature, your suggestion that the bank might have done that in this case seems a bit far fetched.
However I can see why the OP was not happy about the way his bank behaved, if they don't check ID's/signatures and they give your money to someone else then you'll have to deal with the aftermath which in his case caused a lot of problems, failed dd's etc.

    And Halifax told you this?

The vast majority of companies never give out results of disciplinary action. This seems very odd.

As if they'd 'panic' and forge a signature. Ludicrous.

If you're thinking of the bank as a single entity then it might seem ludicrous, but if you think about a single staff member with need of their job as they have mouths to feed.. it's not so ludicrous.

with need of their job as they have mouths to feed...what does this mean?

If you are suggesting that bank cashiers are engaging in criminal activities because they have mouths to feed, you need to provide evidence - of even exceptional cases that have been proven.

I'm just suggesting that, when faced with a serious error, there are some people who would try to cover it up rather than hold their hands up.
