So almost every time I or OH step outside the door the old witch pulls the net to one side to stare - how is that me stalking her exactly?

The others I don't really know about except other neighbours tell me what they gossip about and they seem to know most goings on although never anything helpful.

To all those that suggested they are good for stopping crime well a neighbour got burgled in daylight and surprise surprise not one of the nosy lot saw anything. Our van got broken into, again, nothing seen and to top it all there is a young guy who I am 99% sure is drug dealing and yet the nosy brigade don't seem to notice that either.

I am not that young (60) but at least I have a life

why do you refer to her as an old witch?

My Nan was a curtain twitcher. We all used to tease her about it.
One day, there was an armed robbery at the local supermarket and they'd dumped the getaway car down her road, which was a cul-de-sac.

You know what? That was the only day she wasn't looking out of her window and never saw the robbers!

But regards why they do it, it's because they're lonely and often housebound. My mum watches the people walking past her house. I think it makes her feel a little connected to the world, as the only company she has is my brother and his girlfriend. (I live 160 miles away and am housebound myself, but I have chickens in the garden and the internet to keep me occupied.)

We all have a window on the world, why not use it.
  • If you can't cope with living next to an old person just remember one thing - don't get old.

I can't but help notice that here people are being criticised for being nosey while on the baby crying thread younger are being encouraged to be just that.
Windows are more than just letting light into a room, they are for being looked from.

Would anyone say that a child stared at them so must be "loopy."? I think not, and yet that is stated on this thread regarding an older person.
If anyone sees a person looking out from a window, they have to be looking up at that window. I try to be the best neighbour so when I walk up to my house, I avert my gaze from any neighbouring house. If any are watching me they are very welcome.

Me nosey? I have no idea of anyone's name, nor the car they drive , whether they work or whatever. I know the name of the little boy next door who visits but I have no idea what he looks like. I just told a drunk woman to move on from my open window and take her foul effing and c-ing mouth with her, she was going off on her phone standing outside. Maybe that'll bring a brick later through the window I dare not look from.
  • The middle aged man who lives across the street from me is constantly at his window peering out the moment there is any noise from outside. I presume he's worried about his car being damaged or something because whenever somebody is parking next to him, he's there watching. Awhile after we moved in, I noticed that every time I'm getting out of my car and walking up to the house, he is always popping out of his house and putting something in the recycle bin, which made me wonder if he keeps recyclables next to the door purely so he has an excuse to go outside and see what other people are up to!

It doesn't bother me in the slightest though :) I'd like to think it would be a good thing that he's always keeping an eye out, just incase anything serious actually happened!

I know the names of pretty well everyone in the street, their childrens' names, what cars they drive and what they do for a living and much more.

Me, nosey? No, we just talk to each other.

I don't think it's age particularly, have had 2 dreadful older gossipy neighbors and 1 really great elderly neighbour. My guess is the nice lady was always nice and the others were always gossips.
Can't imagine I will morph into a nosy gossip when I get to 65, hope I'm right.
