Although I didn't have a huge amount of pain, I did get cramps in my groin and had heavy periods that would last ten days, heavy for six of them.
I couldn't wait for the menopause and it eventually came when my periods just stopped suddenly at the age of 54. No gradual winding down for me!
Luckily my menopause was relatively symptom-free and I did not need to take HRT. A Doctor told me that the older you are when you have it, the better it is, both for symptoms and for things like bone loss, so although I was heartily sick of having periods in my 50s, I'm glad they lasted that long.
I'm now 64 and never regret my loss of fertility
No advice for the OP, other than commiserations and I hope they find some help soon. xxxx(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I had these type of symptoms last year and went to the doctors. I was scanned and was diagnosed with a polyp. It was removed and my periods are better but are still heavy. Always best to get a check up done , even if only to see if you can relieve the symptoms. (I am 50 btw)“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. I was like the OP for a few years. After the birth of my last child 14 yrs ago I had a mirena coil fitted and have never looked back. It had to changed every 5 yrs which is uncomfortable but well worth it. I would never go back to the old days feeling dreadful every month. Also I have no periods at all with the coil!!!If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0

If you get no joy from the GP, go back and see the Nurse. They usually deal with contraception issues day to day and can be much more sympathetic to women having problem periods.0

I was the same and had a coil fitted almost 5 yrs ago within months my periods had completely stopped:j
My dd has the depo injections every 3 months with the same effect .
don't suffer op there's no need for it.
Another vote for depo here as well. I didn't get on with the coil, but depo is fantastic. Best thing I ever did, trying the injections. With me, it got to a point where I was anaemic.
I'd get your blood count checked as well OP while you are at the doctors.

Mines can vary. But since the doctor changed my pill, they have been crazy heavy - even 6 months after stopping said pill.
Theres a friend of mine who a few years back (upon his gf complaining about period pains) said yeah but you dont have to be put up with the pain of being kicked in the nuts.
My reply to him was "how about I kick you in them once a month for the next 40 years and see if you feel the same way".

I had presumed that my periods were getting heavier as I am approaching menopause. I had not considered fibroids or polyps.
The coil sounds like a good option. I may ask about this. Have any of you had problems with this option?0 -
I had the coil for 3 months. Without going into too much detail, it just didn't work out at all.
It ended up with me having it removed and going straight onto the injections, which has worked out far better.

I have the Mirena coil too...it's different to the regular coil which can make periods worse, make sure you're talking about the Mirena! It is hormonal but lower dose than taking the pill. I'm 50 at the end of the month and just been recommended to get mine changed. I seem to be starting with menopausal symproms, though obviously have no periods at all, and the doctor said that if I stay on the Mirena, even if menopausal symptoms get worse I could take low dose oestrogen to effectively give HRT cover. Mirena doesn't suit everybody but I absolutely love mine0

Another vote for mirena. I was having an awful time each month, couldn't be out of the house for more than an hour, I was spending pounds and pounds on sanitary protection. Got the Mirena fitted in November 2013, took a while (about 3 - 4 months) to settle down, had headaches, cramp, periods very light but all over the place. Now I have maybe 1 or 2 days bleeding every month, virtually nothing, so light I use panty liners!! I'm amazed, should have done it years ago!0
