Periods really are VILE aren't they?! I have very strong painkillers for the chronic illness that I have, and so I don't get much bad period pain now, but I still get a rather heavy flow.
I had horrific periods from age 13 when I started them, to age 18, when I started the pill. From aged 18 to mid 30s, I was on the pill, and then the doctor stopped letting me have it as I was 4 stone overweight at the time and my blood pressure was a bit high.
Cue the monstrous periods again.
I frequently had one day a month off work, and struggled to exist sometimes; so much pain and suffering. Why DO they have to be so vile?!
Then about 4-5 years after, I was diagnosed with the chronic illness I have now, (at around early 40s,) and I started having strong painkillers, and these stopped the bad period pain. (Thankfully!)
Even so, as I said, they are still very heavy at times, and I get so annoyed at having to wipe constantly, and worry about messing the flippin' chair and car seat, and about leakages when I'm walking and about, and it getting on the mattress on the bed. (Nice subject eh?!) :rotfl:
Seriously, with each month that passes, I cuss a bit more, and think when on EARTH are these EVER going to stop?! I am FIFTY !!!!!!!
You have my sympathy BIG TIME O.P.! I can only suggest going on the pill, or some nurofen plus, or strong codeine tablets (if the doc will give you some.)Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!0 -
Tranexamic acid taken on day one/two was a wonder to behold I too had to use S+ applicator tampons/always nightime towels. Due to no regularity - went a year without one once & the one that happened had me sitting on the loo all day! But I did have PCOS. Not easy driving a nus like that!0

I entirely sympathise OP. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago and suffer horrific pain and flooding every three weeks making it extremely difficult to function. My GP has been fantastic and has just put me on a combination of Tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid because the Pill proved to be unsuitable. It lightens the bleeding and helps to ease the gut wrenching cramps. I am having the mirena coil put in within the next few weeks and have been told this will make them so much more manageable, if that fails then the next step will be laser ablation and only hysterectomy as an absolute last resort.0

Periods, the bane of my life or they were. Heading towards the menopause they got heavier and were quite debilitating at times. Forget sanitary protection on their own I was having to use microfiber cloths too as added protection. I was anaemic more times that not and took supplements prescribed by the doctor.
The Mirena coil was suggested to me but the reason I was sterilized was because I didn't want artificial hormones floating around my body. Then a hysterectomy was suggested as a scan revealed an very large womb but I didn't want that either. I tried the tablets but they didn't work for me.
Apart from one spot of bleeding I had a few months ago which turned out to be a nasty urine infection instead of a period, ive been period free for 2 years.
I'm glad I stuck it out as now I'm post menopause, no longer to I have to worry about anaemia and the skin colouring I had as a child is finally coming back. In fact I was only thinking the other day that the foundation I wear on my face is a little too pale now. Ive been using that shade for years and years. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I'm 47 and I'm on the mini pill because it stops my periods. I have endometriosis which can cause heavy, painful periods. I've had it since my early 20s so broke through the embarrassment barrier a long time ago. Go to your doctors, there are loads of things that you can be given to help you once they've checked a few things. Don't be embarrassed, surely what you go through every month has the potential to be far more embarrassing. Doctors will have had far stranger conversations than the one you will have.0

I had the same very very heavy periods so bad that leaving the house in the first couple of days was virtually impossible.
Finally decided last year that enough was enough and went to see gp.
She was great, really helpful, gave me tranexamic acid and an appointment to have Mirena coil fitted.
Coil took about 6 months to stop periods completely - at one point I didn't think it was going to work but the tablets helped the heavy days.
One year on and no periods at all now, fantastic!0
