    Debt-free and Proud!

I`d not want to be on the news interviewed, throwing champagne whilst holding a cheque - I seriously just couldn`t do it :rotfl:

I would buy a house with room to swing a cat - we are renting.
I would buy my parents and siblings a home.
I would go on holiday/travel the world - never been on holiday ever, never left essex - except Skegness butlins for 4 days LOL!
I would learn to drive and buy a PINK car!
I would buy my husband his dream car.
I would also put an equal load for both my children for when they were older.

I have always thought about winning (I don`t do the lotto but do the euro when its a biggy) and I often think I would choose random people from here, mostly people who have followed me, people who I follow in their debtfree diary.
I would also help out the handful of real life friends who have helped me out emotionally, mentally and physically.

I would also donate a chunk to the air ambulance, and st clares hospice.

eta: my friends brother won the lottery just over 14m and didn't give a penny to anyone, he never told them either until recently when one of his sons let it out at a family party!
They are a close family too, I suppose everyone is different.

I'd sell my house and buy a nice bungalow down south with a granny annexe for my Mom and employ round the clock care for her.

I'd pay off my daughters mortgage and buy homes for all of my kids as they are in rented accomodation.

The rest, well, I'd probably widen my horizons a bit.:)

Average cost of running a £26.9m home is about £250k according to this.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2523381/Dont-feel-sorry-Inside-multi-million-pound-luxury-houses-mansions-cost-250-000-year-just-maintain-1-5-times-cost-average-HOME.html

I think £100k a year would cover the running cost of my modest £2-4m home.

I wouldn't enjoy my win if i couldn't share it with my nearest and dearest even if that brings consequences.

The best idea for me so far is telling people you one say £5m rather than £80m.

I'd probably pay off my mortgage, build another house in the countryside, buy the guitar I really want, buy a mk 1 escort, make a few charitable donations twice a year, I would rather buy the things the charity needs rather than donate money. As for family I only have the OH and her kids so make their lives more comfortable. The rest I would waste on holidays and pursuing hobbies and other interests.

I don't really understand people who go public when they win. Surely it can't be worth the hassle?
  • Mega win as in several million, I'd keep £1m for myself. The rest would be put into a trust and invested for my children. It would be inequitable for me to dole money straight out to them because of the differences in their ages and circumstances. I can see the arguments it would cause. They would be free to request help from the trust when needed and could also ask for any mortgages to be paid off/house to be bought.

I don't understand it either. The only reason I can think of is that they are attention seekers and want their 15 minutes of fame?

I listened to a couple of programmes about lottery winners and they say Camelot come on quite strongly, telling them that they'll have masses of support from Camelot in handling the money if they go public and dire warnings that if they don't, they'll be given the cheque and sent on their way to cope alone and how they'll be at risk because they're not used to dealing with huge sums, etc.

Most people on the receiving end of a massive win are probably still in shock when Camelot puts the pressure on and give in. It suits Camelot to have the winners' pictures in the press.

Very true. I'd never thought of it like that.

Handy to know for when I get that big win! :D
